info@eastcorkjournal.ie Greywood Killeagh Celebratory Fête Hughie and Jessica Coo-

gan, Proprietors of ‘Grey- wood Arts’ have worked tremendously hard over the past year to bring cre- ativity and life back to the village of Killeagh. In what seemed like a crazy dream in 2015, Hughie and Jes- sica took the leap of faith and purchased the prop- erty with the prospect of

opening an artist residency and workshop space. They were envisioning a project whereby they could turn a place with great history into a site where their skills in the arts and cultural non-profits could intersect and provide low-cost and no-cost space to artists. Their dream be- came a reality in July 2017 when Greywood Arts was

officially opened. It is now a multi-disciplinary art- ist residency, where artists and creatives in all disci- plines are welcome to stay in self-catering accommo- dation and have access to workspace. movement

They have a studio,

visual

art studio, space for writers, a library with a piano for musicians, as well as a large

dining/meeting room, all of which are

located at

the foot of the beautiful Glenbower Woods. One year later, Greywood has had 23 artists in residence, 20+ events held, a huge community art project, and the exciting return of the Killeagh May Sunday Fes- tival, which was a huge suc- cess with locals. They are

already seeing the return of artists for a second resi- dence, have made long time connections with East Cork artists, and have begun to build connections with lo- cal groups including Kyle National School, Foróige, Monday Club, History Club. To celebrate the suc- cess of Greywood one year later, they invited locals on

Sunday July 1 to an Anni- versary Fête.

A beautiful

day began with locals paint- ing a Mural on the garden wall using the Ogham Al- phabet while enjoying some ice cream and snacks. They then went on to enjoy the ‘ Art Exhibition ‘ featuring photographer and former artist in residence

Aissa Lopez and Killeagh based by ANDREA CUNNINGHAM

painter Sinead Ní Chion- aola. Later on author, E.R Murray,

recited some of

her short fiction and es- say readings, and the very successful evening finished with drinks and music. Well done to Jessica and

Hughie for the extremely hard work they have put into replenishing creativity in Killeagh.
