Abernethy Cup Quarter-final Cloyne 2-14

Photos by DENIS O’FLYNN

Cloyne

Fr. O’Neill’s 1-16 reached the

penultimate stage of the prestigious

Abernethy

Cup when they had a nar- row one point win over Fr. O’ Neill’s at a well pre- pared and sun drenched Rostellan. Cloyne led at the break by two points only for O’ Neill’s to hit 1-4 in an eight minute pe- riod immediately after the break. This led to a great latter period of the game where Cloyne scored two goals at crucial times in the game to kill off a nev- er say die attitude from Fr.

O’ Neill’s. The

opening period

was fairly level with both sides evenly matched. Ci- aran Mullins opened the scoring with the evergreen Diarmuid O’Sullivan hit- ting number two on two minutes. Fr. O’ Neill’s replied with a brace of points by Kevin O’Sulli- van, the first from a free and the second from a lovely cross field pass from Eoin Conway. Paudie O’Sullivan and Liam O’Driscoll exchanged points before Paudie hit

a peach of a point from a sideline ball to applause from both sets of support- ers. O’Driscoll and Kevin O’Sullivan added a point each to put Fr. O’ Neill’s briefly ahead by a point. However the O’Sullivan brothers had the Cloyne lead restored again as we entered added time with Paudie hitting two frees. Thomas Millerick, follow- ing one of his traditional solos, added his first point but Paudie again penal- ised some sloppy O’ Neill’s defending with a point as referee Niall O’Neill blew the half time whistle. Fr. O’ Neill’s hit their

purple patch on the re- sumption with Kevin O’Sullivan popping over three points, two 65’s and a free with their goal com- ing from Paudie McMa- hon. Daniel Harrington sprung for a lovely point but

chael Cahill who struck a great shot past ‘George’ Sloane in the O’ Neill’s goal. Jake Coady followed this up with a point and Cloyne were leading by the minimum as we en- tered the final quarter of the

game. However O’Sullivan

capatilised on a stray pass and added a further point for Cloyne. Ian Cahill and Pa Dineen added a point each for Cloyne as Kevin O’Sullivan struck another point for O’Neill’s keeping three points between the sides. Cloyne’s goal came from a long clearance from the aforementioned Diarmuid O’Sullivan who found Ian Cahill roving outside the 20m line. Ca- hill let the ball off to Mi-

O’ Neill’s battled back and went two points up again as Kevin O’Sullivan hit two frees and Liam O’Driscoll got on the end of a Mark O’Keeffe pass to raise

another white

flag. Calamity struck O’ Neill’s as Cloyne captain, Keith Dennehy, slotted a low ball past Sloane for the all-important goal and put a point between the sides again. Both sides played outstanding hurl- ing as O’ Neill’s tried their best

to get ahead again. Kevin O’Sullivan levelled

the game with five min- utes remaining but Brian Minahane

and Coady

sealed Fr. O’ Neill’s fate with a point each and with a last throw of the dice

shot sailed over the bar to let a point between the sides at
