Art in the Wilds 2018

Anthony Arkus

Hand Forged Metal I am a blacksmith artist making hand-

forged architectural elements, furniture and sculpture. I strive to create work that invites the viewer’s touch with a tactile, appealing surface. I fashion organic, bo- tanical forms using abstract, contem- porary aesthetics to achieve my goal of creating well-proportioned and timeless functional art. As a blacksmith I heat mild steel to 2500 degrees F in a gas or coal forge. Once the

Mixed Media (Collage) My art is inspired by childhood, a magi-

cal time. My work reflects the innocence of youth and imagination on canvas. The process I use to create my artwork

incorporates a variety of mediums and methods. Canvasses are layered with paint, paper and wax and

then distressed with sandpaper to give an antiqued ap- pearance. I paint in acrylic medium and layer with a range of materials including gouache, wax, papers and stamp-

ings. Modeling paste is another material I use to build up the surface of paintings. This can be seen on trees I paint that also include hand-cut paper leaves, which give the surface of the painting a subtle relief.

material is heated to a plas- tic state, I am able to form hand forged components that are joined with rivets, tendons, dovetails or col- lars. I work to push this tra-

ditional approach to new boundaries, making new methods, built on the old to create furniture and archi- tectural elements for a con- temporary collector. My goal is to create work

that is not only functional but is beautiful high quality that pushes the viewer’s be- liefs in what steel can do. Iron, brass, copper and

other metals are heated in coal or gas forge up to 2700

degrees F and then hand forged. Anthony received an Art in the Wilds

Awards of Excellence in 2016 for his hand forged metal.
