Art in the Wilds 2018
My interest in
nature and the outdoors is what initially brought me to photogra- phy. I have traveled over most of the
United States, I find that North Central Pennsylvania re- mains my favorite. Subjects will vary from plant close-ups to landscapes to vast night skies. Three years ago I was asked to teach starry sky pho-
tography at Cherry Springs State Park. Night photography has become one of my favorites and those have become my best selling photographs. Waterfall, wildflowers, land- scapes are all photographed in the moment when opti- mum light and weather meet to create a wall-hanger im- age.

business specializing in nature and fine art. My interest in nature photography developed in 1970 after reading In Wil- derness is the Preservation of the World, a book of photographs by Eliot Porter ac- companied by selected passages from
Thoreau’s Walden Pond. Nature photography provides me with
the opportunity to experience nature in a creative way. I value the diversity in na-
ture, sorting out the patterns and textures in the chaos of nature, and observing the interplay of wildlife. The subjects and colors of my photographs can help create a mood at home or work. A great photograph can give a room a refreshing quality, providing a tranquil psychological impact, establish- ing a mood of happiness and optimism, stimulating creativity, creating excitement or sophistication. My inspiration is search- ing for the most appealing characteristics of a scene. Sometimes it can be a larger landscape or animal portrait, but often it is a pattern, shape, color, the light, an animal behavior, or a combination. Some of my photographs are “found”
photos where I happen upon an image or concept and explore the best way to capture it, what to include, lighting adjust- ments, etc. As I’m viewing the scene, I’m also considering on how to best process the image and how the final product will
look. I think about whether it is best to just perform minimum post processing before printing or whether it might look better as a black or white, or maybe use a painting effect or filter to simplify or otherwise al- ter the image. I review my decisions during the processing of the digital negative. Other photographs are created, as with
my light box series of flowers, where I se- lect cut flowers and place them on a light box. The light from beneath the blossom with the white plexiglass background shows the translucence and texture of the blossom. This series became a solo show at Cattaraugus County Arts Council’s Art on Main Gallery. I make my own art. I print most of my
images as giclee prints on archival cotton fiber paper and mat them. I use a special- ty provider for mats, frames, and canvas prints.
My photos are all made with Nikon cameras and pro-
cessed in Adobe Photoshop. Those are the tools, but the mind’s eye must come to sharp focus. Image files are sent to a lab. I do my own matting &
framing.
