Hand-forged metal jewelry (Pewter Copper, Brass)
Art in the Wilds 2018
I love cre-
ating metal jewelry. It is one way I can express the amazing wonders I ob se r v e in nature.
Whether hiking, beach-combing, or strolling the orchard on the family farm, I am constantly in awe of the beauty around me. Translating that into wearable art allows me to share
the experience with others. The dialogue that occurs with people who venture into my booth is also a source of in- spiration. Though we may come from different walks of life, we find a sense of connection as they relate to my pieces and we, for a brief moment, are hiking partners.

My creative process takes different forms. Sometimes I draw out ideas at my studio, or I may have a thought
during lunch and sketch something down on a napkin at the cafe, then proceed by working the piece out in metal with a detailed plan in my head. I work with natural
fibers of many types to create texture on my pieces. The process of imprinting cactus fiber, egg shell, feather, etc. is way to make the piece unique. It is a very exciting process because I’m never ex- actly sure what the result will be so often the outcome of the imprint will direct me to the next step for the piece. Each piece is hand-fabricated using traditional and some- times primitive metal working techniques.
I believe
functional and aesthetic con- siderations are of equal impor- tance when cre- ating a piece. I strive to create simple, utilitar- ian pots whose
forms will endure the rigors of everyday use but whose surfaces will elevate commonplace objects and enrich daily routine. It is my hope that the objects I create are used daily by
the people that take them home. My handmade pieces were never intended to sit on a shelf gathering dust, out of reach and untouched by human hands. Instead, it is my hope that these pots become part of the tapestry of daily life. They are the vessels that hold the tea shared between friends, that serve the meals shared by loved ones. I hope the owners of these pots are nourished by the contents within, uplifted by the simple beauty of the form and el- evated design of the decorative surfaces, and fortified by friends and family that come together to create a shared

experience and happy memory. I create wheel thrown, functional pottery intended for
daily use. Once formed and trimmed I decorate the sur- face of the pot. Surface work is achieved by incising the clay surface during the leather hard stage. This allows for very crisp imagery and highly defined borders. I then lay in the background colors and add screen printed elements. I
finish with the addition of hand drawn botanical imagery once again using the incising technique. After bisque firing a clear glaze is applied and the pot is fired to vitrification.
