12 — Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Castle-Babcock Diane (landscape images) Block print I combine my love of the outdoors and

love of my craft to create Impressionistic landscapes. My images are based on my experiences in parks and trails near my home in the Adirondacks and upstate New York. I choose to work from nature because

I walk daily with my dog Lilly and my friends. I find that this is often the most enjoyable part of my day. While being out- doors I have come to experience peace with myself and harmony with creation. I

am also interested in observing the effect of light, wind, temperature and humidity on a particular place and how these ele- ments change its appearance from day to day.

My goal is to create work that is con-

stantly moving, changing, and growing just as nature evolves. I invite the viewer to come into the landscape and be part of the experience. I begin each print with a drawing from

nature. In this drawing I plan composition and colors. The drawing is transferred onto battleship linoleum. Using a variety of v- shaped gouges, I carve into the linoleum to create the image. I then ink the raised or uncut area of the block and hand press it onto Japanese rice paper. Each color is carved and printed sepa-

rately. Using a variety of cutting and print- ing techniques, I create nuances of texture, light and depth. The prints are pressed with a bamboo barren and the block is de- stroyed as I make the print. I print a color and then cut away what stays that color so it does not get inked again. Editions are fifty or less.

My paintings can

be found in collections around the world. I have published natural history books for children and con- tribute much of my work to conservation organizations who have benefitted from its sale. My wife and I live in ru-

grew as I did, to become an avocation that took me all over the world to see, study, photograph and sketch the native flora and fauna from the Artic to Africa, and then come home to paint what I experienced hoping to instill the awe and wonder of nature in others. All my work begins with detailed research on the

subject I choose to depict. That includes observation, behavioral patterns, habitat, and details of its anatomy. Then I do a complete pencil sketch to assure my satisfac- tion with the composition before adding color. Paint is applied in layers, and finally detail is applied with a very fine-tipped brush.
