Art in the Wilds 2018 Northrop Jack Wood (Turned Vessels

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 — 27

I’ve been turn-

ing wood for many years. It all started with a bedroom set I built 30 years ago. I wanted to turn the bedposts. That experience got me hooked.

Over the years I developed my skills and artistry in turning by making unique gifts for family and friends. My daugh- ter suggested I consider selling my work. Since retiring and moving to Kane in 1999, I’ve enjoyed success in sell- ing my creations. I am known for my bowls, platters and vessels from local wood like black cherry, walnut, maple, butternut, locust, sumac and others. Woodturning is done on a lathe. It is distinctive from

most forms of woodworking because the wood is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. There are a couple of types of turning. Spindle turn-

ing is named for the type of product originally produced such as furniture legs, spindles, pens, and some vessels. In spindle turning the grain of the wood runs lengthwise parallel to the bed of the lathe. In face plate turning, the grain of the wood runs

perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Most of my bowls, platters and many of my vessels are face plate turned. I use natural edges and carving techniques to finish a piece. Many people have contributed wonderful and interest-

ing wood (including burls) to my woodpile. I enjoy work- ing with burls. They create some of the most interesting pieces. When I cut a block of wood, I do have a sense of what the wood is telling me to create from it. Each wood- turning is a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of art.
