22 — Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Johnson-Leske Stacie Stonewear Growing up, I was mesmerized by dance.

I was awed by the colorful costumes, bril- liant lights and dazzling sets surrounding those magical dancing creatures. As a ceramics artist, I am inspired by and

employ many lessons acquired from years of dreaming of and training for a career as a ballerina. For me, the clay is the dancer’s body. It appears delicate, but in truth, has great strength and elasticity. As my “danc- er” pirouettes on the wheel, it expands and contracts into elegant forms. I am the music, using the rhythm of the spinning

it their own feelings and experiences, in- viting them to see and lift for themselves a light and graceful dancer. As you look at my work, take in the dancing, laughing lines, unexpected bursts of color and joy- ful movement. When you hold a piece of my pottery in your hand you’re also hold- ing a small piece of my childhood spent in the ballet. My process starts first with a ball of

wheel to encourage fanciful shapes to emerge from the clay which, like a balleri- na, are lightweight yet deceptively strong. Once complete, the form is costumed in richly colored glazes, enhancing the shape and drawing the viewer’s eyes. Each piece allows the viewer to bring to

wet clay placed on the wheel and cen- tered, assuring the stability of the piece as it is formed. Next, it is manipulated into the envisioned size and shape using my hands, a sponge and shaping tools. The rough shape is then set aside to begin air drying. When the piece is leather hard, it is

returned to the wheel, to create a foot rim and remove any excess clay. Once the form is complete, it may be altered, add- ing handles, holes, etc. The piece is then set aside to completely air dry.

heats to cone 06 (1,830 degrees Fahrenheit). The pieces emerge from the kiln hard, po- rous and bright white. Next, the piece is glazed. I dip, drizzle, brush and sponge on the

glazes to create eye catch- ing effects. After glazing, the pieces are returned to the kiln for the final (high) firing. I fire to cone 6 (2,232 degrees Fahrenheit). It is during this firing that the true colors of the glazes come out.
