Art in the Wilds 2018

Larry Downey

(on PA Flagstone or framed) Photography

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 — 13

It was a tran-

sitional, even tu- multuous time in my life, but one I would not change, for it was during this time that I found my second true

calling in life as a photographer. My first was Mathemat- ics and I am currently a Mathematics professor at Edin- boro University. Any good photographer will tell you, the primary com-

ponents of a good photo are composition and lighting, and when opportunities present themselves, a photogra- pher must be technically sound to obtain a good capture. However, a good capture can fall short of a work of art, and being a good technician is only the start. True art, no matter what the medium, is a representation of the artist’s vision and creativity. As it evolves, I believe that my own art is as much a reflection of me as an artist as it is the raw beauty in nature that I am so privileged to witness. While I am a nature photographer, my subject matter

has become quite diverse. From wide angle landscapes to extremely tiny subject matter (e.g. 1mm snowflakes), or even using different spectrums of light to give a new perspective, my art continues to change as I do. I am ever amazed at the beauty in the natural world, and consider it my job to capture and present these things in an artful way. I hope you can find some beauty in my art! My art starts as either an unexpected moment or a

purposefully orchestrated photo shoot intended to cap- ture the essence of a subject or concept. Different com- binations of composition, lighting and perspective can dramatically change the feel of the piece. Most images require editing time, sometimes many hours in fact, to bring the raw photo to the intended

form. Just like pre-shoot considerations, subtle changes in editing can make the piece evoke a very different feel- ing from the viewer. Once the image is what I want it to be, I must decide

how best to present the piece. My style is shifting from traditional framing techniques to metal, canvas and Pennsylvania flagstone. The pieces on flagstone start with me hand sculpting the stone to match the content. Then, the inks from a special type of print are captured in an acrylic and worked by hand into the surface of the stone. Hand painting with acrylics is also part of the process to give continuity where the stone has been chiseled. Each of these pieces is one of a kind as each stone has unique surface features.

My artwork is

always an attempt at capturing and sharing the love I have for nature! I spend as much time as I can out- doors and have a

special love for the Pennsylvania Wilds. I enjoy recreating landscape scenes using graphite and also watercolor. Lately I have been gathering white birch bark from the

forests, drying it, and creating watercolor paintings on the bark surface. I let the texture and the markings on the bark help dictate what the composition will end up

arches cold-press watercolor paper. I really like the way the texture of the paper seems to add dimension to the piece. I’m particularly drawn to trees and love to photo- graph them in the fog and mist. I am sort of obsessed with detail, wanting to include every branch and twig in my trees.
