What does your company do? International Freight Forwarding & Logistics – movement of goods worldwide via sea, air and road.
How did it all start? After being made redundant for second time in two years in 1996 it was time to start my own business.
What’s your greatest achievement so far? Making Millennium Cargo a Worldwide operator and brand in its own right, well-respected globally and still in business 21 years later.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Apart from setting the business up in 1996, the subsequent buy out of my then business partner a few years later was a risk which did pay off without fail.
What keeps you awake at night? An over-active mind constantly delivering ideas and plans than need to be considered and maybe implemented. I never switch off but do sleep sometimes.
If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? So much to be honest but I would employ an experienced business coach or mentor to support me and the business from the start.
What has surprised you most in your job? The ease in which to do business on a global scale, make friends for life overseas. Business is business at end of the day so overcome the language barriers and the world is your oyster.
What advice would you give to someone starting out? Seek a mentor or coach. Never stop learning and make sure what you are doing is your real passion.
Unit 222 • Road F • Boughton Industrial Estate • Newark • Notts • NG22 9LD
Which business do you most admire? Apple, who constantly innovate, re- invent and refresh their products all the time and have made it a ‘must- have’ kind of brand globally.
What exciting projects is your business working on? We are improving our communications and social media presence as well as working on a much-improved customer journey experience that we will be rolling out by end of 2018. Our real big plan is our intention
to make new friends and secure new partners overseas. We are on the acquisition trail and will be looking to purchase two or three smaller freight forwarders over the next three years, and we also hope to introduce five large manufacturers to the business too for us to serve, so perhaps you could be one of them?
What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? Help from UKTI, DIT, meeting facilities, legalisation of documents services that are imperative for my customers, and of course, keeping up- to-date with local business news and happenings and networking. You can basically get as much support as you choose from the Chamber team.
