cleaner, greener smart hybrid buses is part of the bus operator’s pledge to the West Midlands Bus Alliance to improve bus services in the region. It has worked with TfWM and
Birmingham City Council to win £3.27m from the Department for Transport’s National Productivity Improvement Fund. This money will transform the bus passenger experience between Selly Oak and Harborne to Birmingham city centre,
areas identified for accelerated growth in the coming years. The bid is for a package of
measures including: • in-bound bus lane along Harborne Road into the city, delivering an eight minute reduction in journey times in the morning rush hour
• road improvements to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to improve reliability through the site
• next generation real-time information
Currently, outside London,
enforcement of bus lane infringements can only be done by the police, or fixed cameras operated by a council. National Express West Midlands believes that bus lane enforcement powers should be devolved to the West Midlands Combined Authority. National Express are also stepping
up measures to improve security with super-clear CCTV cameras on the Platinums. And Transport for West Midlands has just been granted further powers to enable the West Midlands Safer Travel Partnership to deal more effectively with anti-social behaviour.
