Protecting businesses: Rhian Banks and Oliver Pooley
The importance of understanding IP
Edgbaston-based Barker Brettell provides intellectual property (IP) advice to new businesses, and has been helping with the Chamber’s start-up programme by attending and hosting events, seminars and workshops. The firm’s specialist trademark,
patent, design and copyright attorneys have been helping the start-ups in a number of ways, including helping advising entrepreneurs on how to best protect their ideas and products. Among those taking part in this

‘Investment in IP doesn’t have to break the bank, but omitting to focus on it could break a business’
and knowledge, and prevent your competitors taking advantage of your hard work. “Intellectual property can also be

very least, recognising when you should do something about registering your IP can protect your investment and future proof your business.” Anabela Fereira, head of new
enterprise at the Chamber, said: “IP is something which is often disregarded by start-ups as something they don’t need to think about. But it is something they have to be very careful about – they could be breaching it by using someone’s intellectual property or if they don’t protect themselves, someone else could use theirs. “IP is relevant to everyone who is starting a business.”
