News Extra Development plans for Edgbaston By Jessica Brookes

Calthorpe Estates has revealed its development plans for Edgbaston Medical Quarter, Edgbaston Village and the former BBC site at Pebble Mill. The company is building on the

success of the Edgbaston Medical Quarter (EMQ), which has attracted international attention and investment in the area of more than £73.5m, following successful trade missions and promotions such as the recent Arab Health exhibition in January (see page 34).

‘The perception of Edgbaston has changed, with EMQ recognised throughout the UK and internationally’

Mark Lee, chief executive of

Calthorpe Estates, said: “The perception of Edgbaston has changed, with EMQ recognised throughout the UK and internationally, and this is attracting new investment across the estate. We have a number of buildings, like Regency House on the Hagley

Road, with potential for improvements and conversion which will be moved forward during 2018.” Calthorpe aims to transform

Edgbaston Village by creating a mixed use urban community area to boost the leisure and retail economy, alongside the area’s traditional commercial office space. The company is looking for

buyers to invest in retail units on the estate, and with key investments from Medispa, Loki wines, and Boston Tea Party already secured,

the area is already reaping the rewards of new jobs and economic growth in its leisure economy. Calthorpe is hoping to further the

development of the 27 acre, former BBC studios site, Pebble Mill. Located one mile from the University of Birmingham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the site has five plots that will host a range of new facilities. The site will include a Bupa 62-

bedroom private care home, Circle Health’s new private hospital, and student living accommodation with

drive thru coffee and restaurant facilities. Calthorpe Estates has also

outlined development plans for a 53,800 square feet health care hub. The regeneration of the Pebble Mill site will boost the private health care economy, as well as create new jobs for health and social care professionals. Mark Lee said: “Edgbaston will

continue to play a leading part in the future development of the city as we bring forward ever more investment and growth projects.”
