International Trade Business Hub

Exploring green tech opportunities in India

Businesses from across the Midlands will be visiting India this month in order to develop their knowledge and contacts in one of the world’s fastest growing economies. The five- day trip between 18 and 23 March aims to expose SMEs to the potential opportunities in green and digital manufacturing in the country. The visit is being organised and funded by the

Government’s productivity and growth initiative Innovate UK, through its Global Business Accelerator Programme, and delivered by Enterprise Europe Network and Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

‘Businesses will travel to key sites of investment and change in the green energy and smart technology sector’

A range of businesses that specialise in green

technology, low carbon solutions, digital manufacturing and waste management will meet key businesses and stakeholders that are investing in India’s CleanTech, smart city and circular economy initiatives. India’s firm climate change policies and the

country’s predicted projections of just over 50 per cent reliance on non-fossil fuels by 2027, presents key opportunities for companies specialising in sustainable and digital manufacturing and technology. Further to this, India’s increased focus on the

circular economy in their manufacturing ventures will present challenges that UK businesses can

utilise to showcase the diversity and flexibility that they can offer to the growing economy. Businesses will travel to key sites of

investment and change in the green energy and smart technology sectors in Hyderabad, Amaravati and Gujarat. These sites are key development regions for start-ups, smart cities, and waste management and reduction. Gabrielle Evans, international programmes co-

ordinator for Enterprise Europe Network, said: “The Global Business Accelerator Programme trip will present a great opportunity for collaboration and development between UK businesses and Indian counterparts, industry experts and researchers.”

Indian student makes history

Birmingham City University International College (BCUIC) has enrolled its 1,000th student. Rachit Patel, aged 19 and from Mumbai in

India, began his studies on the college’s Art and Design Foundation programme. The significant milestone was marked with

a celebration that saw him presented with a £1,000 bursary to help towards his studies. Rachit said: “I am deeply honoured to be

the 1,000th student to enrol at BCUIC and this wonderful bursary is a real help toward my education. Coming to study here in the UK was something I had always wanted to do, but I never expected I would be making history on my first day! When researching places to study in the UK, I chose BCUIC specifically because of the incredible service I received from its admissions team.”

Rachit Patel with principal Cheryl Badhams BCUIC opened just under five years ago and

provide undergraduate and postgraduate pathways to Birmingham City University for international students who do not meet the University’s direct entry requirements. It enables those students to progress on to a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

In Brief

West Midlands-based motor sport, automotive supply chain, transport technology and plastics and composites companies have the chance to join a trade visit to Le Mans, home of the world’s oldest active motorsport endurance race. Organised by West Midlands Chambers of

Commerce, the visit will take place between 12 - 15 June and is aimed at small to medium enterprises (SMEs). Andy Smith, international relationships

manager for the EU/DIT co-financed SME International Growth Project, said funded places were available for eligible West Midlands SMEs, which have the opportunity to win business through a series of high-profile B2B meetings with some of the Europe’s leading automotive and transport companies firms. “This is the perfect opportunity for the

innovative motor sport, automotive and supply chain companies in our area to showcase their expertise to a global market,” he said. The programme includes up to 12

timetabled one-to-one meetings as part of the International Business Days Le Mans 2018, networking opportunities and conferences covering topics such as additives and automotive/mobility innovation. Places are strictly limited and to receive a

The only international trade show to bring together the tea and coffee industry’s entire supply chain is coming to the NEC. The exhibition centre will host the Tea &

Coffee World Cup when it heads to the UK for the first time between 3 and 5 September. The industry’s whole supply chain from

bean and leaf to cup will descend on the NEC. Readers of the Tea & Coffee Trade Journal

voted to hold the event in the UK, following on from a successful three years in Singapore and Poland. Megan Freeman, events manager from the

Tea & Coffee Trade Journal publishers Bell Publishing, said: “We wanted to change the location of the Tea & Coffee World Cup so we put the question of where we should host the event out to the industry, and the UK was the clear winner. The UK has adopted the café culture, with coffee shop visitors purchasing an estimated 2.3 billion cups of coffee a year. “For us, the NEC was the perfect venue. Not

only is the location so easy to get to from a national and international point of view, Birmingham is a vibrant city with friendly people, delicious food and fantastic architecture. Due to the amount of support we have already received from the NEC, we are sure this will be the best World Cup yet!” The exhibition features working machinery

on the exhibition floor, both raw and finished product for sampling and stocks of industrial supplies for detailed inspection.
