Solihull Solihull Chamber Patrons

Bringing business to the classroom

A Solihull secondary school is stepping up its efforts to help its students become accustomed to the world of work, in a bid to bridge the gap between academia and business and commerce. The school is Arden Academy in Knowle,

which caters for pupils aged 11 to 18. The business engagement strategy will include inviting individuals from various professions and industries to address and motivate students, by giving them an insight into how they can build a successful career. Year 8 and 9 will receive a broad generalised

exposure to various occupations as they start thinking about their GCSE options. For Year 11 pupils, the strategy will be

broadened to include such things as the preparation of a CV, letters of application and participation in mock interviews. The support for sixth form students will be

centred around a ‘Futures’ week, which will provide students with access to a wide range of speakers and workshops aimed at providing information and guidance about universities, finance, apprenticeships and gap years.

‘Year 8 and 9 will receive a broad generalised exposure to various occupations’

Arden’s assistant principal, Eleanor Collett,

said: “All year groups within the school benefit from exposure to people who’ve already ‘been there and got the t-shirt’, hearing about the route taken to obtain success, and how they have got to where they have today.

“This exposure proves invaluable and is a key

aspect of the careers advice and guidance on offer at Arden.” Arden’s strategy also includes building key

partnerships. This includes a long standing relationship with the with the local Rotary club who organise a ‘Beyond-16’ event annually in November which provides students with the opportunity to meet a range of local and national businesses and training providers. The school also has an enterprise adviser,

Bradley Parkes, from Specsavers Solihull and Shirley, who said: “These events, with the support of the local and wider business community, deliver an environment that engages, inspires and creates a labour market that is fit to serve the nations requirements in the short and long term.” Eleanor Collett added: “Working with an

enterprise adviser has really helped us develop a strategy that provides work ready students as well as further education ready students. “It also enables us to engage more closely

with the business community which is so important for our students.”
