More bed space for city students
A new report shows a record- breaking 21,768 purpose- built student accommodation bed spaces were delivered to Birmingham students in 2017. Cushman & Wakefield’s UK
Student Accommodation Report 2017-18 also reported a 106 per cent increase in the supply of studio rooms since 2014 and found that students were paying 2.9 per cent more per bed space in 2017-18 compared to the previous academic year. The report is not all
positive though, as it also states the number of EU students coming to the UK has dropped by two per cent since the post Brexit vote. David Feeney, advisory
associate at Cushman & Wakefield, said: “It is clear that the UK remains a highly attractive place for students to study and this continues to be reflected in the growing student accommodation market.”

New offices target HS2 workers
Suites of new offices to let that are on the doorstep of the proposed Curzon Street HS2 station have been released at Millennium Point, Birmingham. It is the first time space has become available in the landmark building since 2015. The offices, which range in size from 818 sq.ft to nearly
2,500 sq.ft, are expected to appeal to organisations with interests in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and those involved in the design and development of the new multi-million pound HS2 station. The new accommodation results from a
reconfiguration of Millennium Point – Birmingham Eastside’s anchor building – which is already home to organisations specialising in STEM and provides a range of meeting spaces. Judith Armstrong, chief executive of Millennium
Point, said: “We have developed office spaces to meet the needs of technology-focused organisations that might be supporting the development of HS2, whilst meeting Millennium Point’s aims and ambitions of supporting STEM. “The new accommodation is within a stone’s throw of
the Curzon Street development – on the site of the oldest railway terminus in the world that is going to be home to the most advanced railway infrastructure in the world. “HS2 also plans to redevelop the 350 acre site around

the station to include shops, 2,000 homes and a hotel.” It follows the opening of conference and events
venue Connect at Millennium Point, as part of a £1m investment programme into the building. Flexible leases are available, with rents available on request. The letting of the office space will also support the
development of STEM in the West Midlands region – with profits from Millennium Point’s commercial activities in the building being used to fund organisations, project and initiatives with interests in STEM. In the past four years, Millennium Point Trust – which
owns the building – has donated more than £4m to support STEM initiatives.
