International Trade International City earns foreign

investment uplift Greater Birmingham has the best strategy for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) of all large cities in Europe, according to a new report. The region has come out on top in fDi Magazine's European Cities and Regions of the Future ranking – one of the industry’s most prominent benchmarks of FDI competitiveness. The awards also rank Greater Birmingham in Europe’s top 10 large cities for connectivity and business friendliness. The rankings are based on the support

services offered to new businesses and unprecedented levels of infrastructure investment underway to improve connectivity and pave the way for HS2. An international awards ceremony will

take place at property conference MIPIM (Cannes, Frances) on Tuesday 13 March. Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City

Council, said: “This award is testament to the region’s robust growth strategy, critical mass of talent and continuously evolving landscape.” Key sectors such as advanced

manufacturing, life sciences, business, professional and financial services, tech and digital media have been targeted as part of Greater Birmingham’s strategy to diversify its economy. In addition, fDi Magazine recognised the

relocations service operating in Birmingham’s Enterprise Zone, as part of its Global Free Zones of the Year 2017. The service was launched at MIPIM in 2015

as the first of its kind in the UK, tailored to firms moving to the Enterprise Zone. It is operated by the West Midlands

Growth Company and supported by Birmingham City Council and the Greater Birmingham & Solihull LEP (GBSLEP).

Commerce (WMCC), this trade event was open to West Midlands-based SMEs. Attendees ranged from experienced exporters

looking to expand their global reach to those that have never traded outside of the UK before. More than 300 one-to-one meetings took

place with market specialists and trade advisers, and parallel workshops provided specific market intelligence too. Those focusing on North America, Africa, UAE, Germany and India proved to be the most popular among delegates.

Andy Smith, WMCC international relationships manager, said the turnout demonstrated that companies from across the West Midlands region were keen to explore overseas markets. “This was a great turnout for such an event

and it shows that businesses are hungry for export advice and intelligence,” he said. “It was heartening to see the level of interest

across the market spectrum, from close EU neighbours to further-flung growth markets such as those in Africa or South East Asia.”
