Cadbury Foundation gives back to community
Project to help the elderly get active
Sport Birmingham has announced a fundraising partnership with social enterprise organisation ‘Oomph’ in order to encourage elderly Birmingham citizens to become more active. The initiative comes off the back
of research by Age UK that found on average 60.6 per cent of 65+ citizens in Birmingham have their physical activities limited a little or a lot by long-term health problems. The new project, called ‘Active
Adults’, is designed to make a positive contribution to the mental and physical wellbeing of older and vulnerable citizens in Birmingham, by encouraging them to participate in more regular physical activity. The project emphasises that regular exercise amongst older adults has been proven to reduce fragility and falls, improve mobility and boost mood. The project will train up to 20 new
exercise instructors who will support and encourage individuals into regular activity, by leading two to four classes a week for attendees. Sport Birmingham and Oomph highlight that increasing attendees’ interaction and integration with other members of their community ill ultimately improve their quality of life. The campaign is aiming to raise £10,000 by the 12 March.
Four charities from across the region have been picked by employees at Mondelez International sites throughout the West Midlands to each receive a donation of £5,000. Sandwell Advocacy, Lindens
Primary School in Walsall, Blackwell First School and Cannock-based charity Special Needs Adventure Playground (SNAP) will be granted the funds from The Cadbury Foundation, as part of its ‘Your Charity Your Choice’ scheme. Each year, all Mondelez
International UK employees are invited to nominate wellbeing- related charities or projects close to their hearts, with the final shortlisted charities up for vote amongst fellow colleagues.
Smiles better: Cannock-based SNAP is one of the charities to benefit
‘We’re extremely proud to be able to support the charities that are important to our employees’
Sandwell Advocacy, nominated
by Michael Huggins within the Bournville site, has been developing a cancer advocacy project for older people, designed to support any mental health issues that can also arise following a diagnosis. The Cadbury Foundation’s donation will aid training courses for its volunteers and much more. Lindens Primary School,
nominated by Wayne Hand at the company’s site in Minworth, will use the grant to purchase a multi- sensory teepee. This will provide children suffering from anxiety and
depression a relaxing and quirky place to enjoy. The tipi will also double as a soft play structure for the five children at the school who require specialised physical education. Through fundraising events, the
PFTA at Blackwell First School provides resources for the school that lie outside of state funding. The contribution will go towards the PFTA’s current project of increasing outdoor learning opportunities, which benefit the children’s mental well-being. SNAP is a small charity supporting
young people with disabilities to join in with the types of play others may take for granted. This funding will be used to build a roof for its current block-paved outdoor play area, allowing even more open space regardless of the weather.
The Cadbury Foundation was set
up in 1935 in recognition of Richard and George Cadbury and their
investment in the welfare of their employees and the local community. Kelly Farrell, community affairs
manager at Mondelez International, said: “We’re extremely proud to be able to support the charities that are important to our employees through our ‘Your Charity Your Choice’ scheme.” Dave Bradshaw, project co-
ordinator at Sandwell Advocacy, said: “This donation will help us to provide vital support to ensure that those affected by cancer are able to make informed choices and decisions about their treatment and care.” Bob Heighway, chairman of
SNAP, said: “The grant will enable us to enhance our facilities to our local community groups.”
