Business News Barristers to take boxing to India By Philip Parkin
Two Birmingham-based organisations are helping the World Boxing Federation (WBF) break into India. 2M Vision Limited, a
manufacturer of nutrition and health products, and No5 Barristers’ Chambers are backing the first WBF world title fight to be held in India, which will take place in March. The bout will feature current
WBF world heavyweight champion, Erzen Rrustemi, while a supporting bout will decide the first ever WBF Indian national champion at super middleweight. A member of No5 Barristers’ Chambers’ regulatory group, Ekwall Singh Tiwana has been appointed legal counsel to the WBF board. He said: “Birmingham is
becoming a hub for sport, not only in respect of its standing as a centre of expert advice to benefit sporting stars, clubs and organisations, but also in terms of its ability to provide venues for sports events, from amateur to professional, including the hugely prestigious Commonwealth Games 2022. “I am very pleased to be
appointed to the board of the World Boxing Federation. The WBF has interests in 53 countries, and

many tenants of No5 Barristers’ Chambers are deploying their expertise in a number of them, so I anticipate growing involvement of members of the regulatory group with the WBF.” No5’s involvement with the WBF
Catering firm goes to the races with £2.5m contract win
Amadeus – catering arm to the NEC Group – has secured a £2.5m contract with Stratford-on-Avon Racecourse to provide exclusive catering services at the venue on race and non-race days. The five-year contract will see Amadeus run retail and hospitality
catering at race events, as well as with providing conference and banqueting catering at the venue on non-race days. This contract win adds to Amadeus’s growing portfolio, which includes
catering for seven million visitors a year as part of the NEC Group and over 30 venues across the UK including visitor attractions, exhibition and stadia venues. In addition, Amadeus caters for hundreds of private events every year
and a number of prestigious sporting events including the Lawn Tennis Association’s Aegon championships, Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and the IMG Ricoh Women’s Open Golf. The catering team at Stratford-on-Avon Racecourse will be headed by Amadeus’s general manager for events, Samantha Bates, who has over 22 years’ experience with the business. Kevin Watson, managing director of Amadeus, said: “Last year, Amadeus’
events team achieved record results under Sam’s leadership and she will bring unparalleled expertise to this partnership. “With over 40-years’ experience in event catering, we understand the
complexities of operating at outdoor sporting events, adapting our retail strategies to meet challenges such as fluctuating visitor numbers and unpredictable weather.
And they’re off: Stratford contract is a ‘first’ for Amadeus this year “In addition, we also understand the art of great conference and
banqueting catering, constantly innovating and tailoring our menu offering based on delegate or visitor profile.” Ilona Barnett, Stratford-on-Avon Racecourse Manager, said: “We are
really looking forward to Amadeus bringing their unique style of catering to the venue. They have a fantastic reputation for delivering excellence at visitor attractions and sporting events and we were impressed by their innovative menus and retail concepts which will take our food and beverage offering to a new level for our customers.” Over the past five years, Amadeus has seen phenomenal growth in its
external venue and events catering business. The Stratford-on-Avon Racecourse contract marks the first new business win for Amadeus this year, with an exciting pipeline of opportunities in 2018.
March 2018 CHAMBERLINK 27
world title bout in India came about via entrepreneur Hardeep Rai, a director and co-founder of 2M Vision who is also a long time associate of Ekwall Singh Tiwana. Mr Rai is well connected in India, and is using this to help the WBF
break into the market, which up to now had not taken to boxing. The entrepreneur is hoping that
his company’s relationship with the WBF will help raise awareness of its sports nutrition product range not only among those in the world of boxing, but participants of other sports disciplines too. Mr Rai is also behind the newly launched World Boxing Fed. Global Limited, a business that will supply branded boxing merchandise and associated products into new and growing markets, such as India. He said: “Professional boxing has
not really taken hold in India, a nation with a population estimated by the UN to be in excess of 1.3 billion people. “The sport calls for high levels of
commitment and self-discipline and I believe will prove very popular among those wishing to learn the noble art and businesses looking at it as offering very attractive promotional and commercial opportunities. “I have heard a number of boxers
explain that their lives might have been very different if they had not been almost ‘saved’ by boxing. That thinking will also see World Boxing Fed. Global Limited explore avenues to support via boxing those who may be disadvantaged or disaffected and offer a route to recognised boxing at an international level.”
