Financial professionals to benefit from salary surge


Financial services professionals in the Midlands are set to enjoy salary growth this year, according to the 2018 Salary Survey conducted by recruitment firm Robert Walters. The Midlands is a popular


location for large banks and financial services firms to base mid and back office functions, offering access to a highly skilled workforce with lower operating costs than would be incurred if based in the capital. As a result, there is a growing


demand for financial services professionals across the region. Habiba Khatoon, associate


director at Robert Walters Birmingham, said: “Large multinational banks and financial services firms have long recognised the benefits of basing certain functions of their business in the Midlands. “While front office functions are


still frequently based in the capital, many mid and back office teams are now based in large shared service centres located around

regional hubs such as Birmingham and Nottingham. “This trend has created steady


demand for financial services professionals in the Midlands, with employers prepared to increase salaries to secure top calibre talent.” According to the Robert Walters


survey, compliance specialists will see the largest salary increases. For those with high-demand


skills, remuneration will increase by eight per cent as employers look to source top talent.

Regulatory pressure has also


driven demand for professionals specialising in operational risk, leading to salary growth of nine per cent, while anti-money-laundering specialists can expect salaries to rise by seven per cent. Habiba added: “The risk of failing

Consortium to tackle digital skills gap


Chamber patrons Aston University, Birmingham City University and the University of Birmingham are part of a consortium that will receive £20m to tackle the UK’s digital skills gap. The next generation of digital specialists will be created through the new Institute of Coding, a consortium of more than 60 universities, businesses and industry experts. The three Birmingham


universities are among 25 Higher Education institutions involved in the project, which is being led by the University of Bath. Speaking at the World Economic


Forum 2018 in Davos, Prime Minister Theresa May said the Institute of Coding, a key part of the Government’s efforts to drive up digital skills through the Industrial Strategy, will equip people of all ages with the skills they need. Launched as part of the


Industrial Strategy, the pilot programmes, located in Leeds, Devon and Somerset, Lincolnshire, Stoke-on-Trent and the West Midlands, will test how to reach out and support people with the cost of retraining.
