State-of- the-art city buses that cost more than a Ferrari
Big advance on the Routemaster: one of the new NXWM Alexander Dennis hybrids By John Lamb
My mode of transport cost more than some Ferraris and is the most luxurious in its class. It also had an upstairs and a ticket machine. This state-of-the-art double-
decker is the latest form of transport in the region. National Express West Midlands (NXWM) have bought 190 of these magnificent beasts, at £235,000 apiece, and their introduction to the roads of the region is paying off big time. Since they started running these
smart Platinums, built by Scottish manufacturer Alexander Dennis Ltd, passenger usage has soared by 11 per cent. I checked out the new rolling
stock – the first time it had been running anywhere in the UK - on Routes 22 and 23 between Edgbaston and Woodgate Valley. I can confirm this is a whole new
travelling experience. You get comfy seats, extra leg room, free wi-fi, USB chargers and pin-sharp, state-of-the-art CCTV cameras to improve safety. A long way from the old Routemasters. And by using these officially low-
carbon buses you can claim to be making a contribution to reducing global warming. They emit extremely low levels
of nitrogen oxides, which are bad for people’s lungs. The new smart

hybrids emit just 0.006 grams/km of NOx. They also put out 33 per cent less carbon dioxide than a Euro V bus. Carbon dioxide emissions lead to global warming. Using these smart hybrids means
that National Express avoid emitting the equivalent of 3034 kg of CO2 every day.
A smart hybrid engine uses two
separate systems to make the bus go - a diesel engine and a small electric motor/generator. Unlike a full hybrid, the electric motor/generator in a smart hybrid does not drive the vehicle on its own - it just helps assist the diesel combustion engine to run more efficiently.
