Driving a new lease
of life
As we look to the future, the majority of us would prefer a life of independence, living in the privacy of our well-loved homes for as long as possible.
However, age, illness and mobility issues means this can sometimes become a challenge, with people feeling isolated and in need of a little help from time to time.
At Thornfield Day Care, they provide quality, flexible day care, with trips and activities built around their clients’ needs to promote quality of life and social inclusion.
Run by John Barr with the help of his sister
Tracey, Thornfield offer specialist support for mature people with varying needs from advanced age and loneliness, to neurological conditions
such as Multiple Sclerosis and Strokes. When dealt with a life changing diagnosis or indeed just feeling the warning signs of getting older, the uncertainty of what lies ahead can mean confidence gets knocked. However, John and his team are on hand to help you take back control and enjoy life to the fullest again. With first-hand experience of adult disability and illness care, John became a carer 20 years ago when his mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at 51 following the loss of her husband to cancer just 12 months earlier. After developing early-onset dementia which accelerated her condition, John and Tracey shared the responsibility of becoming Mum’s full- time care givers.
Having personally been through every aspect of their clients’ own experiences, John is adept at knowing what to expect, how to deal with any issues that develop, and what is also important to their carers and loved ones. For most, it is a bit of time off now and again, with peace of mind that their family member or friend is being looked after and benefitting from days out.
Offering both mental and social stimulation, Thornfield’s daily activities include trips out to locations such as Derbyshire, Retford, Leeds and Hull to visit places of interest, museums or shopping days. With a door-to-door service, John is joined by five staff members who operate two wheelchair- friendly minibuses daily throughout the week. During the school holidays, there is also a special little girl who gives up her play time to helping out her dad, with John’s 10-year-old daughter, Isabelle, regularly joining the team to help at meal times and singing songs on the bus. After picking everyone up from their homes, the group then assess the weather and everyone’s

health before heading out for the day, stopping for a mid-morning tea break on board, before arriving at their chosen destination. Following a day of fun and a bite to eat, the group then return safely home where John and his team make sure coats are hung up, slippers are on and a cup of tea is made ready for a comfortable evening before leaving the home secure. With genuine concern for their welfare and wellbeing, John’s clients are more like friends and have become his extended family over the past three years since starting up in business. While some clients join the team for companionship in old age, others use the service as social rehabilitation following debilitating ill health, with current clients spanning a wide age range. Some come one day a week for something to look forward to, others join John and the Thornfield team every day, excited for new and different days ahead.
Along with private clients, Thornfield also work with the local authority and health services such as the Parkinson’s Unit at Rotherham Hospital and Howarth House Memory Clinic to refer those who have been assessed as having social care needs, with Direct Payments also taken.
