Winter at Winthrop

While we all know a garden looks at its best in the highs of summer, it can also be a calm solace in the colder months, too.

This year, for the very first time since it opened in 2006, Wickersley’s Winthrop Gardens will be staying open during the winter months to continue its role as a sanctuary of support.

Open on Tuesdays and Thursday 11am until 3pm, the gardens and café will be open to the public for them to see the many different features of the garden that juxtapose together.

A therapeutic garden space, the gardens are tended to and conserved by a group of local volunteers who strive to ensure it looks its best all year round through avid landscaping and pruning.

All funds raised on the day will go towards supporting carers living in the Rotherham area.

This winter, stop by and spend an hour or two enjoying the gardens in the rich, warming colours of autumn, where so many other gardens may have fallen barren to the depths of winter.

Pick up your winter bedding plants and pansies to add some colour into your own garden.

Enjoy hearty homemade soups and sandwiches in the on-site café or savour a seasonal treat with one of Winthrop’s festive afternoon teas for just £9.

All monies made from the café goes solely towards keeping the gardens going, with the site run purely by volunteers and Wickersley Parish Council.

During the winter, there will also be crafts, gifts and homemade chutneys and jams on sale to help raise money towards providing a memory café.

Since starting in June, the memory café helps people with dementia and their carers find a quiet refuge in which to meet other people through crafts and a chat. On Friday 1st December, the Winthrop team are hosting their free Christmas memory café from 2pm till 4pm, which includes a festive afternoon tea. Bookings are essential so call Anna Chester on 07397 039226 to book your first come first served place.
