AROUND TOWN

Compliments of the season

A vote of thanks to

While we thank our readers and advertisers for continuing to support us, it is also so refreshing to receive a pat on the back from the people we have worked with over the past year.

At Aroundtown, we strive to support those in our area who are committed to providing charitable works, community events and support groups so thank you to all who trust us to shout about the good work you all do.

Dear Cheryl and Amber,

I thought you would be interested to know that following your March/April article about Rotherham U3A, there was an upsurge in the demand for information about the range of activities it offers to local people aged 50+ and no longer in full-time employment.

Hi folks,

Just a quick update about our inaugural Rotherham and Dearne Valley walking festival which happened in October which has been adjudged by many to have been an outstanding success.

The eight walks over the five days attracted in excess of 500 walkers, drawn from all walks of life, and including guests from as far afield as New Brunswick, Canada, nearer to home Nottingham and Scarborough.

When asked afterwards where they had learned of the walks on offer, a significant number mentioned your Aroundtown Magazine in particular. They did so in glowing terms and said that, although they had previously been unaware of its quality, they intended to seek out further copies in the future.

Beryl’s tribute walk to her late husband Frank attracted no less than 122 walkers and six dogs, including members of both walking groups involved, Frank’s family members and former co-workers.

Whilst the overall lessons of staging this year’s event have still yet to be analysed and discussed at the working group meeting early next month, there is a feeling that this is just the start, and that further similar events will be staged in future years. A very great deal of hard work was involved in putting the whole thing together, with minimal financial support, but there is palpable sense of satisfaction and success which made that dedication worthwhile.

U3A - Come dancing

So much so, that by the end of the summer, we had welcomed around 80 new members to various groups. Many of them mentioned your article as the place where they first heard about the U3A.

Two new groups have been added to the brochure, ‘Family History’ and, by popular demand, another Art group.

Thanks again for helping us raise the profile of U3A, Tricia Macredie 24 aroundtownmagazine.co.uk

On behalf of the members of both Dearne Valley Ramblers and Rotherham Metro, can I take this opportunity to thank you at Aroundtown for your unstinting support in this and other ventures. It was priceless and without it the event would not have been the success that it ultimately was.

Best wishes, Tony Swaby

Thank you to all our valued customers and readers for being part of our journey.

We look forward to sharing the best of South Yorkshire with you in 2018.

Cheryl and Amber xx
