Oh, the weather outside can be frightful, but life never looked more delightful for your pets with our tips for keeping them snug, safe and healthy and preparing for the long winter ahead.
Worms and Fleas
To ensure the festive season goes smoothly without any unwanted visitors, keep on top of flea and worm treatments. Many animals don’t show symptoms of worms, but look out for pets losing weight despite having an increased appetite, their fur being dry and coarse, or them feeling weak and lethargic.
Fleas carry tapeworm eggs so combining the two treatments makes for efficient prevention. Disinfect bowls regularly, manage pasture for animals outdoors, and remember that fleas can survive in the home for many months so keep on top of cleaning.
Visit your local vet or pet store for treatment; you can discuss how regular the treatment needs to be and order an annual supply. From six months old, treatment should be every three months so a calendar reminder could come in use.
Hibernation
Some pets, such as tortoises, need to hibernate for the winter - but it isn’t that easy.

Start by reducing your pet’s food gradually over a couple of weeks whilst lowering the enclosure temperature. Once they’ve stopped eating, give them only water.
After a couple of weeks they should be ready to hibernate; put them in a box with bedding and leave them for the winter. Before starting this process consult your vet and make sure that your species of tortoise needs to hibernate.
Keeping warm
With the temperature dropping and potential snow on the way, we need to make sure that our pets are cosy and warm. Dogs that are elderly or young will be prone to suffer from cold weather, ensuring that your dog has a jumper or weatherproof jacket for walks will be a sure way to keep them warm.
Other pets that live outside such as rabbits and guinea pigs will need their house insulated with a hutch cover and extra bedding. If they become cold quickly then consider fetching them into a garage or out building.
