Christmas Tree

Oh, With Rachelle Alick of Unique Interior Chic

When it’s time to dust those Christmas decorations off for another year, many people would love to have the knack of creating a spectacular Christmas haven like the ones in shop windows.

But with a few simple style tips, you can achieve Christmas tree perfection this year, too.

Location

Be sure to think about a prime location, perhaps in front of the window or at an angle to the room, so it becomes the focal point. Top tip would be to ideally place your tree near a plug socket so you don’t

have extension leads on show or invest in battery operated lights.

Branch fluffing

Ensure the branches are shaped and bent into position to allow you to have a fuller, thicker looking tree. If you have an artificial tree, try to bend each branch so that you can’t see the inches of space between each layer of the branches.

Lighting

Often the most labour intensive part, but if you spend the time doing it right, your tree will look more magical. You can never have too many lights, but experts say about 170 per metre of tree is enough. Start from the top and work

your way down to the bottom, pushing them into the branches so that the wires are not showing, spacing them evenly. Keep taking a large step back - about 3m – to look for any dark or bright spots and rearrange to get more even coverage.

Decoration

Now the fun begins. You will have already chosen your colours and theme, but one tip is to put garlands and ribbons on first as it is a lot harder once baubles are on. Experiment with garlands, ribbons or string beads; start from the top and work your way down to the bottom, using two strands for every vertical foot of tree. Before placing baubles on the

tree, create mini piles to separate the ornaments into colour, shape and design, keeping all the same ornaments together.

Starting with plain coloured baubles as a base, place one bauble on each ‘side’ of each tree, depending on how much of your tree is showing. Putting the exact same bauble of opposite sides will give your tree a more cohesive, professional look.

Work from the top to the bottom, distributing evenly. Try adding larger baubles more into the branches of the tree to give depth and the smaller ones on the tips of the branches. Add your most decorative and expensive baubles last.
