COMMENT
THE
Awards are, quite rightly, held in high regard as the only awards in the region delivered by business, for business. The three packed-out
ceremonies in Derby, Nottingham and Leicester were all fantastic occasions and my congratulations go out to the three overall Business of the Year winners – Chevin Fleet Solutions, Abacus Lighting and Total Motion respectively – as well as all the individual category winners and finalists. While it is a long list, I think it’s important to
acknowledge and thank Mazars as overall Business Awards sponsors as well as Accent, Air-IT, Babington Group, Blueprint Interiors, Nottingham College, The Careers and Enterprise Company, The Dairy, Derby College, DHL, Edward Hands & Lewis, east midlands airport, East Midlands Trains, emh group, Erskine Murray, Freeths, futures housing group, Geldards, Gem, Greenbank, Greendog, Kemps Publishing, Leicester Business Festival, Loughborough University, Maggie’s, the money shop, Morningside Pharmaceuticals, Nuffield Health, Nottingham Trent University, Porsche Centre Leicester, Potter Clarkson, PKF Cooper Parry, Rolls-Royce, Ryley Wealth Management, Samworth Brothers, Shredall, Synther Group and total jobs for their fantastic support as sponsors of the 2017 Chamber Business Awards. One final note of thanks goes to the dedicated Chamber
events team and wider staff network for their hard work in ensuring this year’s Business Awards were a huge success. Such huge events don’t just happen and I know a lot of effort has gone in both over the course of the year and on the nights themselves. There’s no rest for the wicked and plans are already afoot
with regards to the 2018 Business Awards, so stay tuned for announcements concerning the launch date shortly. A full and comprehensive review of the 2017 Business
Awards and all winners is available in the Chamber News section of this magazine, starting on page 18.

LAST WORD
GEOFF POYZER, Chamber President, on the issues that are worth talking about
CHAMBER BUSINESS AWARDS 2017 After months of anticipation, it was a privilege and an honour to witness a collection of the region’s standout businesses collect well-deserved awards at the three black- tie gala dinners across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire last month. The Chamber’s Business
UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES ENCOURAGING Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics showing that unemployment in the East Midlands continues to be better than the national average is encouraging news for the region and reflects what the Chamber’s own Quarterly Economic Survey findings have been telling us. The quarterly data revealed that unemployment currently
stands at 4.3% across the country for the three months to the end of July, the best since 1975, while, in the East Midlands, unemployment for the three months to the end of July was 3.91%, better than the previous quarter, a year and two years earlier. Credit must go to our region’s businesses for continuing to
look to invest and grow, but we shouldn’t take this for granted. Despite the clear desire to grow and invest in staff, our
QES data shows that there continues to be a long-standing issue with firms finding candidates with the right skills to perform the advertised roles, be that skilled manual, professional, managerial, clerical, unskilled or semi-skilled positions. The link between education and business has been
covered extensively in the two-part education features in the past two magazines and remains one of the core areas the Chamber continues to look to address, with ongoing work taking place at local, regional and national level.
THE ‘GREAT’ EAST MIDLANDS During my opening speech as Chamber President in November last year I made no apology for referring to the region as the ‘great’ East Midlands. Indeed, one of my key focuses throughout my year-long
term as President is promoting the East Midlands as a great place to live and work and to that end, I have enjoyed reading through this month’s Business Network with its leisure and tourism theme. The thriving leisure and tourism industry is testament to
the East Midlands’ reputation as a vibrant, forward-thinking region and one that is of paramount importance to the UK as a whole. As the Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, said on a visit here in 2013, the region is a bellwether for UK plc. This highlights that, in uncertain economic times and
with Brexit negotiations ongoing, it is imperative for the East Midlands and its business community to be at the heart of the conversation moving forward and is something the Chamber and its policy and representation team, though consultation with you, our members, is passionate about ensuring happens in the critical months and years that lie ahead.
