HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

HEARING HEALTH Looking after your hearing health is relatively straightforward but addressing any concerns you have around your hearing as soon as possible really is the key. With huge advances in technology there is so much that can be done to improve the situation of someone living with hearing loss.

THE NEXT STEP For those that may have an issue with their hearing, The Ear Foundation recommends a number of steps to take next:

be treated differently and may not be offered the same opportunities as your peers and colleagues. Being open about your hearing loss in the workplace

also creates an opportunity for your colleagues and employers to learn more about hearing loss in a wider context. Hearing loss is something everyone would benefit from knowing a little bit more about as this will affect one in five of the population. Some really small changes can make a big difference,

simple things such as always facing the person you are speaking to, not covering your mouth when you are speaking and avoiding shouting as this actually distorts your lip pattern so this approach is counterproductive. In order to put these changes into action, people first

have to know there is an issue, so being upfront about your hearing loss is, generally speaking, a positive move.

‘Around 11 million UK adults are currently living with some level of hearing loss and 3.7 million of these people are of working age’

• Firstly, make an appointment to see your GP as soon as you can and ask for a referral to your local audiology team

• Do your best to be clear about what you need from people; ie, would a face-to-face meeting be easier for you than a phone call, or using a quiet meeting room for a conference call or Skype rather than a busy open-plan office

• Let your employee know that you have a hearing loss. You may also want to consider Access to Work funding if you feel that some additional equipment would be beneficial to you at work.
