THE

LAST WORD

GEOFF POYZER, Chamber President, on the issues that are worth talking about The Midland Main Line carries over 13 million passengers a

THE LAST WORD It’s been a couple of months since my last Business Network notes and, while business never truly stops, I hope Chamber members have been able to enjoy the summer period with some well-earned rest and are looking forward to what promises to be a busy few months, with plenty on the agenda locally, regionally and nationally.

GDPR New General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) come into force on 25 May 2018, the biggest change in data protection legislation in two decades. It is something that businesses of all shapes and sizes

will have to be on top of and the Chamber will, of course, be very active in this area in order to keep members informed of developments and requirements. Non-compliance penalties have already attracted

publicity and I know Chamber members are requesting clarity on the nature of the changes, their implications and how best they can prepare for them before the regulations become legally-binding. The Chamber will play its part by working with legal

experts to highlight the changes, signpost firms to help where needed and show them what they can and should be doing now to ensure their organisation is adequately prepared. Working with a member law firm, we are working on

setting up a telephone helpline, links to online resources and will be delivering briefing sessions at which businesses can find out more and details will be available shortly.

CHAMBER SATISFACTION SURVEY A big thank you to all of you that contributed to the recent Chamber satisfaction survey. Having looked in-depth at the findings, it was very pleasing to see the Chamber acknowledged for the work it does and the value it adds to its most important commodity; its members. It was equally as important to receive constructive

feedback to enable us to learn how we can do even better and make sure, as a business support organisation, we are serving our members to the best of our ability. To this end, your feedback has been, and continues to be, incredibly important.

RAIL ELECTRIFICATION Since my last notes, we have learned of the Government’s decision not to electrify the Midland Main Line railway, one that came as a huge disappointment to the Chamber and the region’s businesses.

year, connecting four of the largest cities – Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield – to each other and to London. The Chamber has been very active and vocal in its asks of

Government when it comes to transport. Good transport links, especially given the East Midlands central location, are imperative if the region is to maximise its incredible potential. Quite rightly, the Chamber has taken a hard stance on

this and has urged Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, to reconsider his decision. Full reaction can be found in the Chamber News section

of this edition and the Chamber will, of course, keep members informed of any developments.

STATE OF THE ECONOMY CONFERENCE The date has been set for the annual State of the Economy Conference, kindly sponsored by bmi regional. This is one of the Chamber’s flagship policy events and one which is attended by key stakeholders regionally and nationally. Bringing together business leaders from across the East Midlands, this is the only conference that focuses on the economic performance and prospects for the region and is an essential event for Chamber members. The agenda, as ever, is jam-packed with a list of

prominent speakers, with all information available via the Chamber’s website, where you can also book your place. Taking place on 10 November at Rolls-Royce in Derby,

the conference will examine the latest research and projections for the regional and national economy and is not to be missed.

BUSINESS AWARDS

Winners from the 2016 Chamber Business Awards

Due to the print deadline of September’s magazine I am, at the time of writing, unable to comment on the three gala dinners that take place this month. I am, however, looking forward to all three celebrations in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire immensely. There will be full and comprehensive reaction in October’s edition of Business Network.
