LAST CHANCE: INTERNATIONAL TRADE OPERATIONS AND PROCEDURES (ITOPS)
The next four-day ITOPS course, the Chamber’s flagship international training course, begins on 9 October. ITOPS is a recognised BCC-accredited qualification, covering the main
elements of export administration, including documentation, customs and excise and other legal requirements, payments and dispatch and shipping. It sees delegates learn how to avoid costly mistakes by improving their
international trade procedures, with some past delegates saving their employers thousands of pounds. ITOPS covers the five main elements of export administration, which
include administration procedures, export documentation, customs and excise and other legal requirements, export payments and dispatch and shipping. Successful candidates will be awarded the BCC Foundation Award in
International Trade. The four-day course is delivered by the Chamber in partnership with Fidelitas Training and sponsored by 512 (Sheffield).

As the UK’s largest export market, the United States naturally presents itself as a key target for East Midlands businesses. In this month’s ‘Spotlight on…’ we look at what makes the USA different from other markets and the opportunities it offers East Midlands exporters.
As the world’s largest export market, USA Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has consistently seen growth of 1.8% or more since 2011 and the USA also boasts the world’s largest public sector. It is also the UK’s second- largest export destination, accounting for 19% of the value of UK exports in 2016/17, second only to the EU as a whole, which bought 44% of UK exports. The USA is not a single national
market, it is a federal system, which means exporters must treat each state as a separate entity with its own laws and procedures, and determine the implications of developing their business in a specific state before doing so. Being a developed market with
lots of similarities to the UK and no language barrier, the USA may seem like an easy market to crack. However, the sheer size of the country and its cultural differences across its regions requires exporters to adopt a different approach to reaching USA businesses and consumers.
