New Ateca plugs the gap

In the modern world of motoring, a crossover is a must-have for any self-respecting manufacturer. Crossovers now account for about half of all new car sales in the UK. Seat is somewhat late to this party but, with the launch of the Ateca, it has arrived in style. Nick Jones has been looking at whether the Ateca lives up to Seat’s lofty expectations.

If you’re going to be late to the ball, you have to make an entrance. And while accepting that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I think Seat’s new Ateca is a handsome, sporty-looking beast and is making a grand entrance. It has a strong but brand-recognisable face, with Seat’s oddly-shaped headlights and radiator grilles that look rugged, and Seat’s trademark S in the centre. Down the sides are Seat’s distinctive swage lines and, because the car

has a 4x4 variant, it stands tall and proud without looking overtly rugged. The Ateca will go toe-to-toe with the Nissan Qashqai, the Skoda Yeti and

its sibling Volkswagen Tiguan in the showroom battle, and that’s tough competition. But is it up to the challenge? There is a good choice of engines available. The entry level is the three-

cylinder, 1.0-litre version which sounds incredibly small for what is a fairly large vehicle. But it will deliver 110mph, emissions of just 119g/km and return 55mpg. If you’re planning to haul the kids to school and not drag a horsebox

across a muddy field, that should be more than adequate. But if you need a little more oomph, the next up is the 1.4-litre, four-

cylinder TSI which will deliver 125mph, 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds and still return an impressive 53mpg. And then there are two diesel versions, a 1.6-litre and a 2.0-litre, offering

150bhp and 185bhp respectively. The smaller diesel can achieve 65mpg and has emissions of 113g/km but

60 business network September 2017 The Ateca has a strong, brand-recognisable face

can sprint past 60mph in 11.6 seconds on its way to 115mph. The range-topping 2.0-litre is also the fastest, offering the 0-60mph

sprint in under eight seconds, a top speed of 130mph, emissions of between 115g/km and 130g/km depending on model spec and fuel economy of up to 60mpg. Most models are front-wheel drive with the power delivered through a
