LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE LITERACY AND THE LRC

Once again it’s been a busy time in the LRC with different events taking place that help to promote Literacy.

We were visited by the author Joffre White in May, which was a fantastic experience for everybody.

The day started off with a talk in the hall for the Year 7 students. Joffre spoke about growing up and how he developed a love of reading from comic books.

Joffre then did some writing workshops with students from a variety of year groups. He talked about how he went about the writing process and what inspired him to write his stories. He then handed out lots of objects and the students used these as inspiration for their writing. By the end of the session the students had the start of a story and Joffre even offered to read the stories once they were finished.

Some students were lucky enough to be able to have lunch with Joffre. During lunch he spoke with the students and they asked lots of interesting questions about writing. He even told us the idea he had for his next book, which sounds fantastic.

The day ended with Joffre signing his books at Year 8 Parents’ Evening. We loved having Joffre in school and we are hoping to work with him in the future.

TEA READ

There was a Spring Tea Read in the LRC at the start of this term. As usual we served tea and cake and had lots of exciting discussions about books. By the time we go to press the final tea read of the Summer will have taken place. I am sure that lots of tea and cake will be served and I know there will be lots of reading too. These are regular events for the Matravers LRC and we will be holding them again next academic year.

MEET THE STUDENT LIBRARIANS

This year I have had lots of help in the LRC. Annie Bell and Alicia Renton are two of the students who have taken on the role of Student Librarian. This is a varied job that involves the students coming to the LRC and helping out at break and lunch.

Alicia and Annie were kind enough to give me a brief interview, where they talked about reading and their favourite LRC tasks.
