everyone laughed and congratulated each other. All the training and the ups and down (both metaphorical and physical!) had been worth it. They collected their medals with pride and the joy on their faces and it is something I’ll never forget.


We later found out that our Jubilee Team were the first out of 49 teams in the 7.5 mile challenge. A huge congratulations to Jack Kitson, Patrick Tadd, Mason Bridewell, James Sorrel, Cameron Swanwick and Bradley Moore; Matravers’ first ever Jubilee challenge team has set the bar incredibly high for those to follow. The original 6 trailblazers should all be unbelievably proud to hold their medals and all agreed that they wanted to return next year to complete the silver award. We look forward to seeing this team grow and improve, whilst smashing some more records I am sure.

an expedition day, their ability to navigate in difficult conditions and their ability to plan, deliver and review a lesson.


Both the assessor and I as the course tutor were in agreement that the performance and standard was very high and we were happy to award a pass to the candidates following a challenging course.


The successful candidates can now offer expeditions and walking activities for professional reward and obtain work within the outdoor industry.


Duke of Edinburgh – The School have completed their licencing process for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and we are now the administrator for the student’s awards. This has taken dedication from the school to ensure our students have this opportunity and looking forward; we hope that the students will make the most of it.


We have conducted a practice Bronze and Silver Expedition located at the Rocks East Woodland just outside of Bath. Our new Expedition leaders took command and worked with our groups to teach them expedition skills and supervise them to encourage independent learning. The Expedition was a mixed bag, the students can happily survive within a campsite environment but need to be more perceptive when navigating as we missed a few fingerboards to indicate the route. All good signs of a practice expedition though and we look forward to seeing their improvement in their qualifying.


YEAR 9 BASIC EXPEDITION LEADER AWARD


The course has completed its training, the team undertook their training course in May. This course looked at Micro Navigation, Campcraft, Emergency procedures, remit awareness and personal journeying. Quite a lot to pack into three days but the candidates were very very good during the course.


In between their training and assessment, the candidates were expected to complete 10 independent treks and 30 hours of leadership. The majority of candidates have undertaken this, leading walks to the Westbury white horse or supporting our DofE training and expeditions.


The assessment course took place in the Quantocks Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The course is a recognised Qualifications and Accredited Framework course and thus, we had to bring in an independent assessor to assess the candidates. Continuing to be proactive in the school copse, year 9 have really come on with their shelter building. The class has now produced some excellent shelters, all structurally strong and work to the principles of why we need shelter.


We have also become successful with our fire making skills, this has taken some time to get right. The class are now competent in making a bow drill and using a flint and steel.


ASSISTANT BASIC EXPEDITION LEADER


The BEAL candidates have been out on their training expedition, having completed their classroom units. Training has gone well and the students had a great deal of fun learning about behaviour management although I think this is because they got play the part of a badly behaved child!


Training has identified the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses and they are now tasked with overcoming these areas of development and becoming strong in all aspects of the course similar to their classroom abilities.
