YEAR 9

As our year group say goodbye to Key Stage 3 and begin their GCSEs I thought I’d ask them about the different things that had happened over the last term or two. It’s certainly been a busy one and the events they described really struck a chord with me. The diversity of experiences really do reflect our Core Values.

So here goes, Year 9 are… H S A D C R

DYNAMIC On 20th June, Year 9 formed a large part of our Athletics Team. It was a scorching hot day but they did us proud, especially in the field events.

A “We went to the University of Bah to compete in the Area Athletics annual competition

against lots of other schools. Matravers did well and we really did try our best in all of our events.

Oscar Morris came first in the boys’ triple jump, Emilia Florczyk came third in girls’ long jump and Ellie Gough came in third on discus, which is good as she’d never really thrown it before and had stepped up at the last minute!”

H S A D C R HAPPY

One of the great things we have here is community- a happy one! We achieve this through solid boundaries and great pastoral support. Part of this support comes from coordinated efforts to get students from different

years interacting, be it through the school show, peer mentoring schemes or academic projects.

“The Guitar Showcase was set up for a 6th Form student, Mikey Pearce so he could be graded on organising a performance from scratch. Students in

A group of 45 students were invited on a trip to Bath Spa University. The aim of this is to give students a taste of university life and to experience the facilities available to them in a modern

day higher education setting, encouraging them to strive towards this throughout their time at school. I believe that actually showing students places a very firm idea into their head, enabling them to visualise their future.

Overall, the performance went well and it was incredibly fun being involved!”

Jess Parfit H S R SUCCESSFUL

From Year 7 students sit exams in our sports hall in a main exam week, following external GCSEs and A-Levels. We believe this gives them the chance to build their resilience ready for Year 11, getting

used to a formal exam environment in an increasingly exam-based curriculum.

“Exams can be quite stressful and sitting in the sports hall can be quite scary. However, I think I did quite well and am definitely getting a bit more used to it, although maths was really tricky!”

Ellie Gough

Years 8 & 9 were asked to participate. Eight performers played two or three songs as well as some group

performances. We all took just over a week to prepare and Mikey was both confident and prepared, which

was very reassuring. He helped out with our confidence and separate performances and focused on us more than he did himself.
