Learning Support (continued)

READING BUDDY SCHEME FOR YEAR 7 STUDENTS THE SIXTH FORM GET INVOLVED

Over thirty Sixth Formers kindly volunteered to become reading buddies this year. For some of them it was for a second year showing their huge commitment to the younger students.

Reading Buddies is run by Learning Support but takes place in the Learning Resource Centre and involves Sixth Form students reading with younger students who just need a little extra help. In reality, it is far more than that, and covers a whole range of things like helping with confidence, self-esteem, social skills and building positive relationships. The Sixth Formers have proved to be excellent role models for the younger students and hopefully some of them will continue to be buddies again next year.

Tiffany Chapman 7.4 said, ‘I liked the reading and I liked my reading buddy. I am quite shy and It helped me speak to people I didn’t know’. Luke Smith in Year 7 got on well with Anna his reading buddy, ‘She was really kind. If I tried hard with my reading she gave me extra reward stamps’.

There is a celebration breakfast at the end of term to say well done and thank you to everyone! TRAMPOLINING CLUB WITH MIIKEE SELMES

The after school trampoline club coached by level 4 coach Miikee Selmes has been running since 2010. It has been a popular and well attended club and Mikkee has helped literally hundreds of students work through their grades and improve their trampoline skills.

Alfie Waker from 7.3 says, ‘I love trampoline club and found it fun. I enjoyed learning the new movements on the trampoline. I have been working on putting together a routine. Its helping my memory!’

Sadly, all good things come to an end and the grant which has allowed us to continue using Miikee as coach for so long has now finally run out. We would all like to thank Miikee and wish him well.
