As part of a big drive to boost efficiency and reduce both operations and maintenance expenditure in the offshore wind industry, James Fisher, in conjunction with specialist lubricant distributor Chemical Corporation (UK) Ltd and fluid handling technology market leader Sage Oil vac (USA), has developed the Ship-to-Turbine (STT)™ oil exchange system.


As well as offering cost savings, STT guarantees clean, filtered oil in a process which massively reduces risk to operators and the environment.


PROBLEMS SOLVED


One of the biggest problems currently facing offshore wind farms is that routine gearbox maintenance – and specifically the exchange of old oil for new – is extremely time consuming and potentially dangerous to offshore personnel. It is a labour intensive process that carries inherent safety, pollution and lubricant contamination risks.


Sage Oil Vac’s Gear Oil Exchange (GOEX) system is successfully used by onshore wind farms around the world, but James Fisher Marine Services has brought the American company along with Chemical Corporation (UK) Ltd, a UK-based distributor of Mobil industrial lubricants, to create STT.


The initiative takes full advantage of Chemical Corporation’s specialist lubricant knowledge and James Fisher’s extensive marine operations expertise (handling over 70% of the world’s ship-to-ship transfers of crude oil at sea and delivering over 90% of the UK’s gasoline, diesel and kerosene) to create a dedicated oil exchange system suitable for operating in the challenging offshore environment.


HOW DOES STT WORK?


STT comprises a containerised GOEX unit that can be accommodated on the deck of a crew transfer vessel (CTV). Umbilical hoses connect to the nacelle to allow direct removal and flushing operations followed by refilling of gearbox and hydraulic oils with filtered oil at rates of up to 25L per minute.


The incredible speed and efficiency is made possible because the oil is pre-heated within the unit to 30 degrees to reduce its viscosity making it easier to pump. The old method demanded manual removal of the used oil and slowly tipping cold oil into the gearbox. Heating the fresh oil within GOEX makes it easier to handle and exchange into the gear box, eliminating contamination risk.
