RESEARCH & INNOvATION An Icebreaker for offshore wind


The Icebreaker project, planned for the waters of Lake Erie north of Cleveland, will be the first of its kind – it is the first freshwater project in North America, the first to withstand significant foundation icing conditions and the first to acquire a Submerged Land Lease in the Great Lakes.


CHALLENGING PROJECTS As project engineering and construction manager ODE is no stranger to challenging offshore wind projects from Round 1 of UK offshore wind to the current Round 3, ODE has provided support and innovative solutions to the majority of offshore wind farms around the British Isles as well as a number of international projects.


ORMONDE OFFSHORE WIND FARM Ormonde Offshore wind farm, for which ODE worked between 2004 and 2012, was recognised at the time of its completion as one of the most innovative operational offshore wind farms in the world.


It was the first commercial deployment of one of the world's largest ‘market-ready’ wind turbines, the Senvion 5MW and first commercial deployment of steel jacket foundations as well as the longest 'single-


pull' electricity export cable installation in UK waters (42km). Recently ODE has also been providing engineering expertise to Dan Tysk, Greater Gabbard, Humber Gateway, Wikinger and Sandbank.


U.S. DEMONSTRATOR PROJECT ODE is now transferring its technical knowledge and innovative approach to the nascent U.S. offshore wind market. Over the past two years, ODE has been working closely with US developer LEEDCo (Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation) on the demonstrator project as part of the U.S. Department of Energy programme to promote the installation of innovative offshore wind systems in the USA.


ICEBREAKER PROJECT For the Icebreaker Project, ODE is undertaking detailed evaluation of a number of foundation types to establish best


technical and commercial suitability for use in these U.S. regions. The aim is to develop and identify new foundation options that would help increase the potential of the U.S. offshore wind capacity by enabling developments in regions which current technology would preclude.


PROJECT PARTNERS


LEEDCo’s other project partners include Case Western Reserve University conducting laboratory testing to validate the selected foundation; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, characterising ice formations in Lake Erie to inform the loads analysis; Sound and Sea Technology, performing geophysical and geotechnical analysis and Fred Olsen Windcarrier, contributing to the installation strategy.
