Examination Close Navitus Bay Wind Park

On 11 March 2015, the examination process for the Navitus Bay Wind Park came to a close and the six month wait for a consent decision began.

This significant Round 3 project has the potential to produce enough renewable energy to power over 700,000 homes, equivalent to eight times the number of homes in Bournemouth and offsetting approximately 1.29 Million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. If consented, the scheme will represent another vital step towards reaching UK renewable energy targets.

The project will also add a potential £1.6 billion to the local economy, over its lifetime, generating significant opportunities for local businesses to become part of the project’s supply chain.

PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT NIRAS, a leading marine environmental consultancy has supported Navitus Bay Development Limited throughout the application and examination process. With 25 years and 20 GW installed capacity of experience in offshore wind, NIRAS supported the project in delivering both the offshore and onshore environmental impact assessment (EIA) and provided support across key technical topics including physical processes, marine ecology and noise, including the provision of evidence at topic specific hearings.

PREVIOUS PROJECT

The Navitus Bay Wind Park marks the sixth wind farm project that NIRAS has supported during the development consent order process within the UK. Previous projects included Galloper, Triton Knoll, Burbo Bank Extension, Walney Extension and Hornsea Project One, each of which was successfully granted consent.

EAST OF ENGLAND EXPERIENCE With projects such as Sheringham Shoal and Scroby Sands now fully operational, the East of England has a wealth of experience to offer schemes which are now coming through the other side of the DCO application and examination process.

DCO PROCESS

Commenting on the DCO process, Stuart Grant of Navitus Bay Development Limited stated: “NIRAS has provided significant support to the Navitus team throughout these important stages of the project. Attention to detail has been particularly important during the examination phase of the project to ensure evidence presented is credible and robust.”
