CABLEFISH ORCADIAN SUCCESS


The waters around East Anglia and the Humber Estuary tend to be shallow and tidal which presents a specific challenge for marine construction and survey. Having come from the tidal energy industry these are conditions that North Sea Systems are experienced at overcoming.


SPECIFIC DESIGN


The company’s survey systems are specifically designed to cope with this criteria and they have already worked with a number of suppliers engaged in delivering offshore wind farm infrastructure in this region.


CableFish and the video and data feeds are fed directly into the vessel’s survey system.


ORKNEY TRIALS


CableFish has been proven at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), Orkney. The system was put through its paces in these tidally-renowned waters and the operators were impressed by the level of control that it afforded to the cable laying operation.


The system can be operated in up to 6 knots currents, does not impede the speed of cable lay and can be adjusted for different cable diameters.

TOUCH-DOWN MONITORING North Sea Systems have just completed trials in Orkney of a survey system that provides a cost effective solution for touchdown monitoring and cable route survey at wind farms. Their CableFish system uses a cable mounted carriage fitted with cameras, lights, USBL beacon and an inertial motion to provide continuous monitoring and mapping of the cable touchdown point.

Most new offshore wind farms require the laid cables to be accurately plotted. The cable routes are often very constrained and require precision lays. This requires the operator to have continuous visual contact with the cable touch down point. ROVs are an obvious solution, but shallow water, strong tides and high operating costs often mean they are impractical.


SOLUTION


CableFish solves these issues by using the cable as a guide wire, enabling the survey systems to operate within metres of the touchdown point regardless of the conditions. A remotely operated electric winch is used to control the depth of


COMMERCIALLY READY


CableFish is around 25% the cost of an equivalent ROV survey and represents another exciting opportunity for the industry to reduce risk and drive down the cost of wind energy. North Sea Systems are now working with offshore operators to tailor the system to their specific needs.
