CONTRACTS FOR DIFFERENCE (CFDS) The recent announcement of East Anglia Offshore One being offered the Government CfDs means that there will now be construction over the next three years of two major wind farms off the coast of East Anglia, those being Dudgeon and East Anglia Offshore One. The construction and then the O&M phase present major market opportunities in this area, especially combined with the vibrancy of the sector which already exists.

Finding and securing these opportunities, as an SME in the supply chain, requires understanding the industry and being close to the larger companies, OrbisEnergy offers the breeding ground to exploit the market opportunities that the sector offers.


OrbisEnergy is a world-leading centre of excellence for the offshore renewable sector, based in Lowestoft, East of England. The innovation centre is owned by Suffolk County Council and managed by Enterprise agency, NWES.


Not only offering office and virtual tenancy services, OrbisEnergy supports ambitious companies looking to harness the expanding opportunities in offshore wind, wave and tidal technologies in the Southern North Sea. OrbisEnergy hosts over 130 tenants including the likes of SSE, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier, 4C Offshore and East Anglia Offshore Wind.


SUPPORT NETWORK


We have found the support network offered has assisted dynamic and hungry businesses to understand and exploit market opportunities, this has led to the creation of over 600 jobs. Our feedback has found that professionals within the offshore renewable sector find sector specific conferences or ‘meet the buyer’ events are excellent opportunities to make contact with key partners and therefore grow their business.


BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONALS


Two further areas that supply chain companies value is the opportunity to work with business development professionals from OrbisEnergy who are external to their business and ‘well connected’ within the sector. Also the availability of grants to assist with innovation and growth is seen as important within the sector. OrbisEnergy has worked in these ways with over 70 companies in the past 18 months. Two examples of this are GEV Offshore Ltd and Le Mark Group.

In regard to the innovation that GEV are looking to bring to market, David suggests that the “Habitat structures have worked well in the oil and gas sector for many years and we decided to migrate the general principle across to offshore wind. Rain, temperature and humidity all significantly impact on an engineer’s ability to complete scheduled maintenance.


This is because both new entrants to the sector and more established businesses understand that making contact with key personnel from other supply chain companies increases their chance of further sales and growth. These opportunities can be formal events as above or meeting a new contact over refreshments in the kitchen area.


GEV OFFSHORE LTD


GEV Wind Power has taken its pioneering wind turbine blade habitat structure for the offshore renewable sector to the next phase via assistance from NWES and OrbisEnergy. David Fletcher, Managing Director of GEV Offshore commented that “funding has not only helped us financially, but our relationship with the OrbisEnergy team has been hugely beneficial in helping us ‘spread the word’ throughout the industry and with original equipment manufacturers about our plans
