TRAINING

Pioneering one-day training courses

Back in September 2014 Lowestoft College played host to a pilot scheme which aimed to provide a pioneering range of one-day training courses targeted at the energy industry.

The four ‘Introduction To’ courses – covering energy, oil and gas, offshore wind and nuclear – are the first of their kind in the UK and are seen as a further step on the route to establishing East Anglia as one of the major hubs of the energy industry. The programme itself focuses on the industry within East Anglia and how it plays a role in the bigger picture.

BASIC INTRODUCTION FOR NON- TECHNICAL INDIVIDUALS These courses have been developed by Skills for Energy and Lowestoft College; they are designed to provide a basic introduction for non-technical individuals who are involved with or working within the energy sector, such as human resources and administration staff, and also those looking to enter the market.

These courses could also be extended to students and unemployed people with an interest in this industry in the future.

SECTION SPONSOR

By the end of the courses individuals will have a better understanding of how local companies contribute to the industry and the roles that are played in the different stages of projects.

EAST OF ENGLAND FOCUS The courses look at all areas of energy production and generation in the East of England, touching on both major sectors and those areas not usually covered in detail, such as onshore wind, solar, biofuels, marine wave and tidal, unconventional oil and gas and electricity generation and transmission.

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS As part of the development process the pilot was carried out in order to gather feedback; although these courses will continue to develop and evolve in order to reflect the changes in the industry. Increasing the knowledge of non-technical staff from local companies increases their ability to compete, securing and delivering the contracts that are the future of our industry.

FUNDING

This programme is part funded by the European Union through the ESF and is co- financed by the Skills Funding Agency.
