Doctor Who 50th anniversary schedule revealed
Nikko granted Transformers licence
The BBC has announced a variety of programmes to mark the 50th anniversary of the fi rst episode of Doctor Who. A 75-minute special episode called The Day Of The Doctor will star Matt Smith and David Tennant. Other highlights include a BBC Two lecture by Professor Brian Cox on the science behind the hit show and the drama An Adventure In Space and Time, written by Mark Gatiss. BBC Four will introduce new audiences to Hartnell, with a re-run of the fi rst ever story. BBC Two’s fl agship arts programme The Culture Show is to present Me, You and Doctor Who, with fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural signifi cance of the BBC’s longest-running TV drama. A 90-minute documentary on BBC Radio 2 will ask “Who Is The Doctor?”. For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will provide a handy primer. CBBC will broadcast a show, 12 Again, bringing together stars to share their memories of Doctor Who. Blue Peter is launching a competition giving viewers aged 6- 14 the opportunity to design a new gadget that will become part of the series and Matt Smith will answer viewers’ questions. BBC Three audiences will be encouraged to vote in Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend.
ITV Studios partners with University Games for Matt Hatter Chronicles
University Games will produce a variety of games spanning traditional and electronic board games and travel games. The range is scheduled to launch in Autumn/Winter 2014. University Games joins a rapidly expanding programme of licensees following Platinum Films’ appointment of Simba Dickie Group as the master toy licensee. They join Penguin, Titan, Topps, TDP Aykroyd, Character World, Smith & Brooks, Trade Mark Collections, VMC and Pedigree.

Radio Control toys manufacturer Nikko has announced a new licensing partnership with the Transformers brand from Hasbro. The agreement, which starts in 2014 and runs through 2016, will see Nikko design and build a line of Transformers Radio Controlled robots and vehicles based on the Autobots and Decepticons from the Transformers universe. The multi-year partnership agreement gives Nikko the opportunity to leverage the upcoming entertainment slate that includes animated TV programming and the continuation of the movie series. Arne Vissers, Nikko’s vice president sales, said: “No doubt Transformers fans will be excited with the innovative style that Nikko will use to create a complete line up of Radio Controlled vehicles. We will follow our strategy to create great toys, and sell them at mass market price-points without any concession to the well-known Nikko quality.” Hasbro and Nikko will work together on a Pan European retail strategy, with dedicated Transformers shelf space, specifi c POS materials, TV campaigns and a large social media offensive. Price points are currently being fi nalised, and product is scheduled to be on shelves at the beginning in 2014.
Henri Le Worm cookery app launches
The Henri Le Worm cookery app for kids, The Missing Cookbook, represented globally by newly-formed Rizon Studios, launched at Raymond Blanc’s restaurant, Brasserie Blanc, in Covent Garden. Industry professionals, journalists, bloggers and their children joined Simon Pegg, the voice of Henri Le Worm and his friends, for breakfast with an exclusive cooking demonstration by Raymond Blanc, children’s entertainers and goody bags. The app, now available on iTunes for iPad and iPad mini, is an educational cookery app developed to connect children with food and nature in a positive way, featuring specially-created recipes by Raymond Blanc, interactive games, facts and music. The app features stories, garden characters and songs as well as over 100 educational food facts, over 30 insect and bug facts and 10 easy recipes.
Horrid Henry teams up with H Grossman
Novel Entertainment has inked a deal with H Grossman to produce a range of products, which will be based on the Horrid Henry brand. The deal covers toys, outdoor
vehicles including scooters, bikes and skateboards, as well as camping equipment. H Grossman will also be producing a range of pocket-money toys including whoopee cushions, yo-yos and bubble guns. The initial concepts for these will be introduced at the upcoming Autumn Fair in the UK, with a full launch planned for January’s Toy Fair. Martin Grossman, managing director at H Grossman, said: “We are delighted to
have another unique character on board. Horrid Henry is famously feisty and we look forward to creating a range of toys inspired by his adventures.” Mike Watts, CEO of Novel Entertainment, added: “H Grossman is a fantastic licensing partner with a pedigree of quality brands, and we are looking forward to jointly launching the range of Horrid Henry toys for fans.”
