Selling More Print, Working More Effi ciently W

Relying on solutions from Standard Finishing, UniGraphic brings bindery functions in-house

e are keenly focused on being as efficient as we possibly can in the press- room and bindery. That’s

the goal, and also the challenge,” notes Bob Quinlan, president of Woburn, MA-based UniGraphic, Inc. With 45 years of operation under

its organizational belt, the print ser- vices supplier also aims to be a one-stop shop for its clientele— providing everything from commer- cial offset and digital printing, to wide-format graphics and mailing services. The missing link was bind- ery and finishing, which for many years had been outsourced. Collaps- ing turnaround times and increas- ing pressure to produce on-demand led UniGraphic to bring finishing in-house—providing better control over the total job, and establishing finishing as a profit center. “Today, it is not unusual for a cli- ent to come to us and say, ‘We need 10 copies of this book, right away.’ And we’re able to accommodate them, thanks to our digital print capabilities and our

in-house bindery technolo-

gies,” Quinlan explains. “So what used to take a couple of days—sending a job out to be bound—now only takes a couple of hours and can be done com- pletely in-house.”

Piece by piece, UniGraphic has

built a comprehensive bindery and finishing equipment list, including folders, cutters, and automated pack- aging equipment. A Standard Horizon Collator and Standard Horizon Auto- mated Booklet Maker have proven instrumental in supporting UniGraph- ic’s short-run business.

Perfect binder addded Most recently, UniGraphic pur- chased a Standard Horizon BQ-470 Perfect Binder with both EVA and PUR adhesive capabilities. “I’d been looking at perfect binders

for several years, but until recently didn’t feel that we could justify the purchase,” Quinlan recalls. “But then our short-run on-demand exploded, and we saw our commercial book runs go from 10,000 books down to fewer than 5,000. That’s been the trend for the past few years; so it made sense for us to bring perfect binding in house, as well.” The

Standard Horizon

enables fully automated setup thanks to an intuitive, icon-based LCD touch- screen. It’s equipped with two large application rollers for strong, high- quality binding of books up to 2.55- inch thick. Capable of producing as many as 1,350 books per hour, the perfect binder is outfitted with an advanced rotary suction feed system that allows it to handle a wide array of cover stocks without leaving behind any unsightly marks.

The BQ-470 comes standard with a digital caliper for measuring book thickness; a double-feed-detect sensor, and a smoke extractor for eliminating hotmelt-glue fumes. “The BQ-470 gives us that competi-

tive binding edge, with a quick-change adhesive system that lets us switch between EVA and PUR adhesives in just minutes,” Quinlan says. “Having that capability in house is a selling tool for us, and we expect [the Standard Horizon BQ-470] to pay for itself in less than a year and a half.”

BQ-470 MGI Announces JETvarnish Sales, M

GI (booth 3217) announced the sale and installation of multiple JETvarnish digital inkjet spot UV coater units

at GRAPH EXPO. The JETvarnish is the only unit of its kind commercially avail- able in the graphics market and received 2010 Encore Must See ‘em recognition. Clear Story, a specialized photo and digital publishing agency in San Diego, CA, selected MGI’s JET- varnish (along with the DF360), for its versatility and efficiency. “With the JETvarnish, we will be at the forefront of creativity and can offer our customers customiza- tion that they can’t get anywhere else,” says Debara Medina, CEO of Clear Story (pictured right). “The addition of spot UV coating will add a whole new dimension to our customer’s stories.” Friesens, located in Altona, Manitoba (Canada), installed a JETvarnish in July 2010. As one of the largest independent book manufacturers in Canada, Friesens utilizes the JETvarnish to bring previ- ously outsourced capabilities in-house. “Our market is drawn to UV and the

Installations at GRAPH EXPO ability to spot UV hardcovers, softcov- ers and dustjackets immediately after lamination has allowed us to move UV covers through our finishing process more quickly than before,” says Byron Loeppky, VP of Operations for Friesens. “The quality it delivers in a produc- tion environment equals what we experi- enced during our evaluation process . We

feel confident that the JETvarnish will achieve the goals established to make this a successful installation.” MGI also confirmed two international

orders at GRAPH EXPO—Lorimer in Melbourne, Australia, and Atual Card in Curitiva, Brazil, both commercial printers.
