Fujifi lm Unveils Inkjet Press
America. Attendees can see the press firsthand at one of five daily presenta- tions being held throughout the show. With the look and feel of an offset press and the versatility and job han- dling of a digital device, the J Press 720 features a standard 4-up offset sheet

UJIFILM North America Corp. (Booth 627) is debuting its sheetfed Fujifilm Digital Inkjet J Press 720 in North
pages per hour, resulting in a product that offers offset quality and robustness plus the versatility to handle short press runs. The J Press 720 prints on coated offset stocks, allowing for printing on standard offset-sized sheets. The J Press 720 has an infrared dry- ing system, which means no drying time after printing, so sheets are ready for finishing. The range of finishing options available is also much wider than with many other digital print technol- ogies. Once imaged, sheets can be treated like an offset sheet, dropping into exist- ing finishing equip- ment.
size with a paper delivery and exit like that of a traditional offset press. It uses Fujifilm Dimatix’s SAMBA
single pass piezo drop-on-demand ink- jet head technology to achieve a true 1,200x1,200 dpi resolution with 4-level gray scale (minimum size: 2 picolitres). An integrated controller incorporates an advanced color management system and color calibration capabilities that maximize color consistency. The press prints up to 2,700 29.5x20.8" 4-up size sheets per hour, or 10,800 8.5x11"
Quality is enhanced through Fujif-
ilm’s anti-curling and rapid coagulation ink technologies, which deliver vibrant images and prevent paper curl and dot gain. The press uses water-based, eco- friendly ink so there is no toner pile- up. The water-based inks also mean the unit requires less cleaning and produces less waste. A CCD sensor scans every sheet and makes necessary alterations in real time. The J Press 720 is capable of variable data printing, for custom, short-run orders.
The Digital Spot UV Coating Opportunity
M
GI’s JETvarnish digital inkjet spot UV coater gives
printers an nomical, 100% digital
method for offline spot UV coating. Spot UV coating was previously possible via offset or screen methods. Both require static plates/screens (with additional costs incurred, plus messy makeready and required overruns) and are only cost effective on longer runs. As more jobs are being produced in shorter runs, printers need to be able to easily adapt to the changing market. Digital operation means no
makeready is required—just add a lay- er or mask to the document in DTP software, process the file through the JETvarnish’s front end system, then send to the unit, for beautiful, precise and inexpensive spot varnished prints. An optional RIP allows for full per- sonalization through the JETvarnish’s integrated variable data capabilities, so each sheet can have unique text, bar codes, graphics and other custom options, a feature not available through
eco-
traditional offset or screen methods. The JETvarnish uses MGI’s patented drop-on-demand (piezo) inkjet technol- ogy, which ensures precise registration on all sheets and line widths as small as 0.5mm (1/144"). Accommodating sheet sizes up to 20x40" (52x105 cm) and speeds up to 0.5 meters per second, the JETvarnish is ideal for mid-to-large commercial operations using offset and/or digital presses. The JETvarnish has multi-substrate capabilities, han- dling paper and plastics (coated) from 50- to 220-pound cover (135-600 gsm). It’s also environmentally friendly, with ozone-free and solvent-free operation, uses a minimum of raw materials and utilizes recyclable packaging. New features for 2010 include left and right guides that allow for align- ment to offset gripper marks on either side of the sheet, resulting in precise registration, and the option to add a second print line to be used with either a single ink color (perfect for bar codes and other Variable Data Printing appli- cations) or a second varnish formula.
