CardPack Continues Transformation with New 10-Color Perfector
Installation of KBA Rapida 106 41-inch press will open up capacity, increase productivity, and reduce waste
C
ardPak, Inc, a supplier of packaging products to con- sumer brand companies across the globe, is prepar- ing for the installation of its new KBA Rapida 106 41-inch 10-color per- fecting press with coating tower and 12-foot extended delivery. The press, currently being built, is slated for a 2010 mid-November installation at CardPak’s headquarters in Solon, OH. “In the past three and a half years,
we have completely transformed our company,” says Tony Petrelli, presi- dent of CardPak. “We’ve established a strategic plan that has improved our operations so that we can practice lean manufacturing and produce environ- mentally sustainable packaging prod-
ucts. This plan has taken us to our full manufacturing capabilities and the installation of the KBA Rapida 106 press to open up 20% to 25% more capacity in our facility.” The Rapida 106, which made its
debut at Drupa 08, features a press speed of 15,000 sph output, ultrafast makeready times, and expanded auto- mation and productivity. It provides a wide choice of automation options, including the KBA DriveTronic dedi- cated drives and the DriveTronic feed- er presetting capabilities. The press also features the GATF InterTech award–winning sidelay-free infeed, DriveTronic SIS. Its KBA Logotronic system allows for presetting of ink fountains.

and their sales, marketing and pro- duction teams, is holding a special combination networking and education program for members in conjunction with GRAPH EXPO 2010. The day and a half event kicks off tonight with an evening reception at the River East Arts Center. Members reconvene tomorrow, Tuesday, for the program themed, “The Relationship between Leadership and Profitability.” A Dscoop Leadership breakfast, open to members, is running from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom of McCormick Place. Immediately following the breakfast is an educa- tional panel discussion session, open to all GRAPH EXPO attendees, from 8:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. “Redirecting Your Business Strategies for Future Success,” moderated by Joe Truncale, NAPL president and CEO, presents the landmark findings of a NAPL major research
project that asked
CEOs of privately-held business in the North American graphic com- munications industry: “Is there a link between sustained, higher than aver- age corporate performance and the interpersonal communication skills of the executive leader?”
This session features two Dscoop members
in the commercial and
large-format segments who success- fully used the study results’ specific approach to leadership. The panelists are providing specific examples of how they altered their intra-company com- munication strategy to foster long-term growth strategies, and will conclude the program with an interactive audi- ence Q&A session.

New technology on CardPak’s Rapida 106 includes the KBA Densi- tronic Professional closed-loop color management scanning spectrophoto- metric system and Qualitronic In- Line Color Control. The substrate range runs from lightweight papers to heavy board, from plastic films to corrugated—all without adjusting any grippers. Before CardPak chose to purchase
its new KBA press, the firm per- formed diligent review of all of the press models on the market, led by Greg Tisone, CardPak’s vice presi- dent
and general manager, and
Mike McDonald, CardPak’s printing department manager. “All of the manufacturers had very good products. This made the decision even harder to make,” states Tisone. “We took our pressman to see the KBA press in action. We talked to field operators and observed actual manu- facturing environments. We could see and discuss the KBA Densitronic and Qualtronic inline quality control system at work. All of the KBA customers that we visited gave high marks to KBA, its presses, the technology, and its service packages. It made us feel very comfort- able purchasing the KBA Rapida 106.”
