MYNC blast off with offi cial club comp

“OBVIOUSLY for me coming to the island for 15 years, fi rst as a clubber, then with my music, you see Space billboards as soon as you land,” says Mark Brown, head of CR2 Records, and founding member and one half of MYNC, as we have a beer the night before the launch party of 2010’s offi cial Space compilation, mixed by MYNC. “To be working with them is amazing.” Now partnered with Chris Ward, Mark approached Space last year suggesting they move away from their policy of commercially minded albums and instead do something closer aligned with the club’s actual music policy. When the fi rst compilation succeeded in doing this, they were invited back, having fortunately also just set-up a permanent offi ce in Ibiza.

With CD one’s deeper, housier selection based around ‘La Terraza’, with tracks from Dyed Soundorom, Shonky and Nic Fanciulli, the second disc takes it later into the night at ‘La Discoteca’, with the likes of Popof and Robert Hood bringing the techno vibes. “We wanted to start it off as if you’re going to the club really early in the evening, gradually building up to take you on a journey,” says Mark. As might be expected from the label that unleashed Fedde Le Grand’s ‘Put Your Hands Up For Detroit’ into the world, and recently hit the top of the Beatport chart with MYNC’s own remix of ‘I Feel Love’, it contains a number of exclusive tracks from CR2 artists, including Germany’s SKJGP Project and Kid Jewel from Malta. “We also have Dan Castro, from Birmingham, who’s kind of Laidback Luke in style,” says Chris. “We’ve signed him exclusively and he’s only been making music for two years.” “For me, it’s the most exciting music I’ve heard since Eric Prydz,” adds Mark excitedly. “He can make house, he can make techno. When we met him he was making music on his laptop through headphones without even a Midi- keyboard!“ This kind of artist development is what lies behind the formation of their new in-house DJ and management agency. “So far we have MYNC, Dan Castro and Jacob Plant, who is more electro and dubstep,” says Sophie Bloggs, from Cr2 Artist Management. “Annie Mac is really into Jacob, who’s only 19, and he was in the studio with Black Eyed Peas a few weeks ago so he could be really massive.”

With a proven ability to walk the tight-rope of underground credibility and overground popularity, MYNC’s next appearance is at Ibiza’s very own temple of cool, We Love, on the 4th July, while the same month sees them start hosting weekly Thursday parties at Sands where MYNC will play host to artists featured on their Underground Sampler series with guest appearances from the likes of Uner, Coyu, Edu and Hauswerks. “We want to become a big electronic label, not just put out house or techno,” Mark concludes. “Look at XL. They started as a rave label releasing records by The Prodigy and SL2. Now they’ve got bands like The White Stripes. We have that opportunity, too.”
