Brazilian superclub take over Privilege
BRAZIL is a country renowned for its beautiful people, beach culture, and love of a good party. So it’s no surprise that Warung, the beach superclub in Southern Brazil which offers all three at once, was in the top 20 of DJmag’s Top 100 Clubs poll this year. Now for the first time ever, it touches down in Ibiza to take over Wednesdays at the mighty Privilege, and inject some Latin spirit into the heart of Ibiza’s clubland. “The idea to have a residency in Ibiza came only five months before the start of the season,” says promoter Ulli Rügger, who divides his time equally between Brazil and Ibiza. “It was always a dream to bring a Brazilian club to Ibiza and show them how it really is.”
Home to nights such as Cocoon and Circo Loco in Brazil, many of their usual headlining DJs were already committed elsewhere but by putting on their thinking caps they’ve come up with an impressively diverse line-up. “Warung’s philosophy is to bring classic guys to the main room,” explains Ulli, “like Dave Seaman, Nick Warren, Danny Howells, Kevin Saunderson from Inner City, Anthony Pappa, Guy J, Gui Boratto, Felix Da Housecat, X-Press 2, Robert Babicz and Aril Brikha.”

The second Coco Loco room, meanwhile, offers label showcases from more underground talents with
Mobilee, Secretsundaze, Supernature and Get Physical all appealing to a clued-up crowd. “We have Alex Niggeman, which I’m really happy about as I think he’s completely under-rated, and Popof who has never been here before which I don’t understand as he won Pacha Best New DJ last year. “We also have our residents Life Is A Loop, who are superstars in Brazil. They play the opening and the second party, and I’m sure people will come back just to see them.”
With big plans to eventually make Brazil another clubbing destination of choice, Ulli is teaming up with travel agents to create packages to visit places like Florianopolis, Balneario and Camboriou, and clubs like Warung and Green Valley, over the winter. But for now, unable to transport Warung’s surroundings, it’s all about spreading the Brazilian attitude instead. “We can’t bring the coast and the beautiful girls from Brazil, although I’m sure there’ll be some! But we’ve got the DJs, the team, the vibe and the concept,” he says enthusiastically. “The theme of the party is happiness. The last few years have been too minimalistic, we want people to smile, have fun and see good-looking people. Party hard, feel good!”
Warung is every Wednesday at Privilege until 15th September.
Reclaim the Dancefloor returns for Round Two
IBIZA ROCKS’ neon coloured spin-off, Reclaim The Dancefloor, is back, all air horns blazing, for a second season. Having torn a swathe through the regimented sound of four-to-the-floor in 2009, this year’s line-up sees Annie Mac, Tiga’s Planet Turbo and Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy amongst those testing the subs of Eden every Wednesday, while an exclusive appearance from Major Lazer adds to the excitement of new monthly residents, Jack Beats and Nero, who join weekly resident, Doorly. To open up their sound, Doorly has recorded ‘Ibiza Rocks presents Reclaim The Dancefloor’, out now on Ministry of Sound. CD1 reflects the current sound of Reclaim The Dancefloor, including four Doorly exclusives, with CD2 celebrating five years of Ibiza Rocks via its indie-electro vibe, both outlining the blueprint that has seen each night thrive.
The compilation also marks the launch of Doorly’s label Pigeonhole This! whose genre- defying ideal is highlighted by a summer EP. “This is my fourth season on the Island and until last year, bar a few great events such as We Love… and Ibiza Rocks, a lot of the line-
ups on the island were not really moving forward,” says Doorly of the recent unprecedented shift in musical options. “It seemed that the whole island was stuck in a strictly house and techno time-warp. That’s why Reclaim The Dancefloor needed to happen. We felt that what was happening in the clubs in the UK at that time, dubstep, UK funky, mash-ups and nights that would cater for all of the above, including house and techno, just wasn’t being represented here.”
Welcoming back huge successes from their inaugural year like Kissy Sell Out, Chase & Status, Toddla T, Rusko, Skream and Fake Blood (plus inviting The Prodigy for Ibiza Rocks’ fifth birthday), it looks set to be another era-defining year. But Doorly has some warning words of advice for island novices like Joker who touches down on 4th August. “On my first season I got cocky in Space and spent 200 Euros purely on yierbas. I suppose I needed to learn that lesson at some point!”
Ibiza Rocks is every Tuesday at Ibiza Rocks Hotel. Reclaim the Dancefloor is every Wednesday at Eden until 16th September.
