London house heads join Ushuaïa
THE CHANGE in Spanish law in recent years might have put paid to early morning after- parties, but for clubbers weaned on marathon sessions, a new saviour has come in the form of the numerous free beach parties which have sprung up to provide extra rave mileage before the late night shenanigans.
Rising head and shoulders above the rest in the immediate cool stakes is Ushuaïa at Playa D’en Bossa, which, as well as welcoming Luciano every Sunday, and holding a Wednesday session which will play host to labels such as Spectral, Playhouse and Raum Musik, are hosting a monthly session from London Sunday carry-on, Fuse.
Started just a year and a half ago as a weekly after-hours party at 93 Feet East, pushing the best in deep underground house and techno, the daytime event soon became a regular Brick Lane carnival, while last season’s weekly event at Delano ended with residents Enzo Siragusa and Nima Goji playing to around 1000 people on the beach. “They’ve managed to bring all the crowd they have from London to Ibiza which was impressive,” says Nima, who originally played as a regular guest before realising
he and Enzo fi tted perfectly for back-to- back sets, of the club’s fi ercely loyal following. Moving to monthly Tuesdays this year to concentrate on quality and maintain Enzo’s sanity after clocking up numerous air miles on the Monday morning red-eye in 2009, the season kicked off with an appearance from Desolat’s tINI. “We take it as it comes,” laughs Enzo when asked about other confi rmed guests for the season. “There’s Lunar City Express, Martinez, Afrilounge, Pagal and a few others. We just want to play more really!” he jokes. “We only book them for one and a half hours,” Nima chips in, the pair as symbiotic off the decks as on. “At one of the parties we played for about 10 hours,” bounces back Enzo. “After that I just carried on playing back-to-back with Seb Zito, our London resident!” With a 4pm start time, get down there early to appreciate similarly epic journeys through their record collections this year.
Fuse is on Tuesday 27th July, 31st August and 28th September, at Ushuaïa. Entry is free.
Ben Santiago’s Ibiza love affair
“I CAME HERE AND FELL IN LOVE in 2004, then came back the next year with lots of ambition and tried my luck,” says new Hed Kandi resident Ben Santiago on the kind of familiar story you hear from ex-pats now resident in Ibiza. “After that I got a job in the West End, came back the next summer, which was 2006, and have been here ever since.”
He joins the Hed Kandi family in bringing a little piece of razzle-dazzle to Es Paradis, and the heart of San Antonio, every Saturday. Adopting the theme of ‘Circus Balearica’, the club’s high-end production promises a spectacle of dancers, drag queens and acrobats, with pre-parties at Cafe Savannah, Ibiza Rocks, Ibiza Rocks Bar and Bucanero Bar warming guests before the ring-side entertainment. “My favourite club is Es Paradis. I’d love to have seen it in its day, with no roof beneath the stars. It’s stunning and Hed Kandi is a glamorous brand, so it’s a match made in heaven.”
It’s almost family in a more literal sense, too. Ben is engaged to The Lovely Laura, Hed Kandi’s long-standing live sax player who, along with men with a passion for percussion, Pav and Ian C, adds a touch of live jamming to the friendly house vibes from residents including Phil Faversham, Andy Daniels, John Jones, Wez Clarke and Luke Neville, and a series of live PAs from Tara McDonald, the voice behind Armand Van Helden’s ‘My My My’ and Axwell’s massive ‘Feel The Vibe’.
With a return for further gigs at Cream, Amnesia, after playing there last year, it’s a sleep-deprived season ahead for Ben. But like many of Ibiza’s residents, it’s not just the island’s unparalleled choice of nightlife that led him to lay down his hat and call it home. “I live for the winters. I’ve done all my going out, so coming to Ibiza was the chance to make a future for myself, doing something I feel passionate about. I think in winter you see the real Ibiza,” he says. “But if it was like the winter all year round it would be boring,” he adds with a cheeky glint.
Hed Kandi is every Saturday at Es Paradis until 25th September. Advance tickets are €35 from
hedkandi.com and
EsParadis.com, or €40 on the door.
