Mar-T spills the beans on Amnesia’s season of 20th anniversary celebrations

Mar-T

“MY FAVOURITE THING about Amnesia is the people,” trusted twelve-year resident Mar-T tells us as the club hits the monumental two decade mark since its 1990 transformation into a modern superclub. “Of course, the club is incredible, but the people are the most important asset of the venue.”

It’s no small compliment when you consider that last season saw Amnesia’s already impressive soundsystem complimented by the fi tting of twenty-four lasers, while the venue has won the Best Global Club award at the Miami Winter Music Conference three times since 2006; something that original founder Antonio Escohotado, who gave the club its name inspired by the fact it should be a place to forget the troubles of the world for one night, would undoubtedly be proud of. “The sound is fantastic,” confi rms DJmag’s No.1 voted DJ, Armin Van Buuren. “The speaker set-up and the way the DJ booth is designed is great.”

But it’s the clubbers who keep coming back summer after summer to attend the club’s stunning array of nights, stretching from the underground techno of Sven Väth’s Cocoon to Spanish favourite Matinee, and Armin’s world- dominating trance, that make Amnesia the unstoppable force it has become. “The best thing about Amnesia is the crowd,” Armin says, echoing Mar-T. “People are on the island to party and have a good time and with so many great parties to choose from, people really decide where they want to go. So the people in the club really love the music, which makes the atmosphere almost magical.” No doubt due to this, Armin launches his new album there in September. “Like every year, I’m really excited,” adds Sven Väth, who has been there for half of Amnesia’s journey, on the club’s unparalleled atmosphere. “We started 10 years ago with Cocoon at Amnesia and now we’re about to step into our own new decade!”

It’s another momentous occasion for Roger Sanchez, whose Release Yourself took over the terrace on Tuesdays last year. “It’s fantastic to return to my favourite terrace which re- invigorated Release Yourself last year. It’s our 10 year anniversary too, so it’s set to be an epic summer!” Over the course of the season, under the banner of ‘20th Anniversary’, Mar-T presents a

series of ‘Amnesia Presents’ Friday events, raising the bar higher to sky-strafi ng levels. Taking place on the terrace, their aim is to push the boat out, welcoming shows that would normally be too technically diffi cult to accommodate to provide a fi tting birthday spectacle. “We have artists playing like 2manydjs live, Richie Hawtin doing his Contakt show, Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier with his full band, Etienne de Crecy live and many more,”reveals Mar-T. “I’m also doing a special production for my sets introducing a new show inspired by the movie Avatar. I can’t say anything more than that for now,” he says with a knowing smile. “You have to see the show. The idea is to offer more to the crowd, introducing video and new technology.”

The 2010 instalment of the ‘Amnesia Underground’ CD series also highlights Mar-T’s skills behind the decks alongside ever-popular Desolat label boss, Loco Dice. As with any journey, it’s not all been plain sailing, Mar-T remembering the time the police closed the venue for a month. “It was really confusing. Suddenly all the workers were without a job but still had to pay their rent and all the costs of staying on the island.”

Each year, though, ends with a similar sense of

satisfaction for Mar-T. “The best memories are always related with the closing party of Amnesia, I have an incredible feeling on that day.”

Before then, join them at Amnesia for what’s going to be their biggest, most spectacular summer ever.
