MEET AND GREET
Designer of the moment David Koma arrives and is introduced to the hair team, led by Trevor Sorbie Art Director, Jo Cree Brown.
After everyone has finished introducing themselves David talks the team through his entire collection, so they can get a clear feel for the clothes and get inspired about the hair looks they’ll be creating on tour. Session styling hero Angelo Seminara
and Trevor Sorbie MBE also pop in to see how the process is coming together.
THE COLLECTION
David’s S/S 10 collection is split into three very different sections: The first comprises of gorgeous nude and beige looks, with in-built metal pieces that allow the clothes to be moulded into a range of shapes and dresses. Long chains add to some of the looks and create striking movement.
The second section is young and fresh; lots of colourful graphic prints, cut-out pieces and embellishments such as individually made glass stones. The third is a more sophisticated set of structured and ornamented black dresses, which have been seen adorning celebrity bodies the world over. Think Cheryl Cole’s statement black dress on last season’s
X Factor.
THE HAIR
To complement each of the individual looks in David’s collection Jo Cree
Brown came up with three cohesive styles for the hair. “I found it really easy to be inspired by his work, as all of the looks were very directional,” says Jo. The first hair look plays on the
sculptured shapes within the first part of the collection, which are achieved by hidden metal pieces. To bring this element out through the hair Jo came up with a two-piece plait that winds around the head, echoing the shapes seen within the clothes. To emphasise the movement of the
chains in the second part of the collection, Jo came up with the idea of short, tight, black wigs with silver sections painted through the sides and fringe. The last look matches the sexy,
sophisticated dresses of the collection’s final section; an on-trend and contrasting wet/dry look using both volume and slicked back sections.
THE DEMONSTRATION
Jo shows the hair team a mood board of the three different looks, before starting the demo on a group of models. Giving them a clear breakdown of
how to achieve each and every style, the team crowds round to watch Jo in action, picking up lots of hints and tips for the tour. The biggest challenge facing the team
is that they will only have 90 seconds to change each look backstage! As the second change involves taking down the models’ sculpted plaits and getting them into the wigs, the team will really be up against it when it comes to precision timing.
THE PREP
The team has less than a month to practice the looks before the tour begins, so Jo advises them to get practising, fast! “You need to know this look inside out. Get practising on your friends and get to know the looks. You need to be able to recreate them at speed in a busy, backstage environment so this is absolutely essential,” advises Jo. And David loved the looks: “They just simply work with my clothes and look really good. I think the final look will be amazing and I’m really excited to be involved with this tour.”
“Designers don’t usually like hairdressers, but David has been very interested and involved with this tour – it’s a great marriage. His creations are very inventive and Jo has definitely echoed that down through the hair. For a show like this it’s very important that we stimulate the team with the collection and
create good synergy.”
